We missed Istvan Szekely there for a while. Last time I saw him on TV Vincent Browne was having his ECB colleague Klaus Masuch for lunch
The biggest part of the burden Ireland has borne throughout its bailout programme has been shouldered by the wealthy.
This is according to the European Commission's mission chief to Ireland, Istvan Szekely.
Mr Szekely said significant improvements had been made in bringing down prices and labour costs to make exports more competitive.
He praised the efforts of exporters in readjusting their cost bases but, he said, "The job is very far from being done".
"Other parts of the economy still have to adjust, including the public sector, to ensure that costs are further brought down and if this happens I have no doubt that Ireland will be back to the kind of growth rates it experienced before and will be contributing to Europe's recovery",' he said.

IBEC is urging the Government to introduce an average rate of €800 per household, per annum.

This would come in as almost twice the level proposed by Finance Minister Michael Noonan.

Ibec claims that the new tax, which comes into effect in July, "provides the opportunity to lessen the burden on business".

This level is necessary in order to preserve business viability and protect jobs.

IBEC said in a submission to an inter-departmental group there was an urgent need to balance out the share of local authority revenue contributed by business.

IBEC only interested in ensuring they continue to receive their share from the public purse.

Why is public money allowed to be used in funding IBEC they are damaging small retailers by demanding further withdrawal of money from the economy.

another few points wiped of Labour polls?

Employers’ group Ibec has said it will totally oppose any move to introduce mandatory trade union recognition or collective bargaining rights as part of a new review established by Minister for Jobs Richard Bruton.

“Furthermore we have to recognise that the vast majority of employers in the private sector operate a direct engagement model which is entirely legitimate and is the preferred approach of many employers and, indeed, their staff.

There was "new legislation for collective bargaining promised in the programme for government"
    Seriously?

One of Labour's red lines! for now.

We will reform the current law on employees’ right to engage in collective bargaining (the Industrial Relations (Amendment) Act 2001), so as to ensure compliance by the State with recent judgements of the European Court of Human Rights.
I assume (but could be wrong) that this is aimed at the Workplace Relations Bill due this Spring, another ‘one stop shop’ which already will see amalgamation of the Labour Relations Commission, National Employment Rights Authority and the Equality Tribunal under the Workplace Relations Commission with all the implications for rights and discrimination that may entail.

McNamara was making noise last year though Bruton appears to be winning out so far.

Am not really sure who will fight Labour's corner at the Cabinet table on this one but if there was ever a time....

Striking Greek workers were literally beaten by police to force them back to work last week - penalty of sacking and or prosecution under new laws if they did not go.

How could Fine Gael resist the temptation to bring in such Fiscally Stable law ?

Mandatory recognition of Unions will not sit terribly well with the American multi nationals over here who follow the American corporate culture of if you treat the staff well then they wont join a union. A lot of the blue chips look down their nose on trade unionism and see it as a barrier to their pursuit of proft. Hence a view being sough from the American Chamber of Commerce .
