Neither Israel or Iran are democracies. Both declare themselves to be states of a particular religion and also enforce this in their laws and customs with religious courts and jurisdiction in civil matters. There is therefore no democracy for non-Jews in the former and non-Muslims in the latter.

Huge divisions in Israel lie between the secular Jews and Orthodox Jews both of whom are vying for control of the state. Secularists tend to be more liberal in their views while Orthodox tend to take a more conservative approach and these views translate in terms of everything from policy making to how they view the approach to treatment of Palestinians. Most recently this was seen in the draft in the Israeli military where Orthodox Jews got an exemption to study while secular Jews view this as less favourable treatment for them (http://news.yahoo.com/israeli-draft-...071228668.html). Secular groups such as Jews for Justice in Palestine are seen to be more secular also in terms of that they want fair treatment for Palestinans but they are also fighting anti semitism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jews_fo...r_Palestinians). This division is one of the most prominent divisions in Israel.
