I think the Grey carries a bug which is fatal to the Red. Not sure if it would be fatal in time to prevent mating.

Here's a clip from a short doc about some odd red squirrel activists in Scotland.

I don't think they can interbred.
This is from a Telegraph article about a new threat to the grey Squirrel. The new, genetic mutation, BLACK Squirrel. I kid you not.
They can interbreed with grey squirrels as they are from the same species, unlike red squirrels.

It wasn't in a white coat, dunno about needing snow, although it's habitat is so high up it probably snows there every year.

A white squirrell could be an albino squirrel

They may crush the flowers, and trample every living thing but they cant stop the spring..

Red squirrels in Killiney, from today's Irish times.

FIFTEEN RED squirrels are to be released in Killiney in south Dublin next week as part of a conservation project.

The Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown red squirrel conservation project will see the introduction of 15 native squirrels to Killiney Hill Park following a cull of grey squirrels in the area.

The article doesnt say how much the relocation project is costing Dun Laoighaire and Rathdown County Council. Apparantly for the first few weeks the cages are going to have 24 hour security.

I love nature and red squirrels but for DLRCC to be spending taxpayers money on this during an economic depression is wrong. But it shows how out of touch the public sector leeches are with the real economy and the contempt they have for taxpayers, who are literally struggling to feed themselves right now.

I hope the squirrels settle and do well in their new habitat.

Every one of those squirrels is paid a HEO salary with gold-plated, index-linked, Rolls Royce pension and a bag of nuts thrown in as well.

Better than it going on expenses isnt it? In reality the squirrel is a much needed part of the ecosystem. They eat nuts, take a dump and then spread the seeds around the forest couldnt be more useful The security might be manned by volunteers, e mail DLRCC and ask them what the cost is and if there is a cost how do they justify spending the money on it (it might be nuts, see what I did there?) and then stick the reply here. Our natural beauty is an intergral part of Ireland and the squirrels are pretty much part of it. Quit barking up the wrong tree....
