You would have to explain the fascism reference to me .......

Pipes, drums n tats beating out a Celtic Kipling sound that was all very Drumcree.
All wrapped up in a very JFK 'let's fly to space' white toothed New Hampshire militarism.

    This isn't just a left/right divide.

    What is it.

    This is no Ganley issue.
This is not an attack on a paymaster.
This is just a cultural debate.

Without 2 and 20 blackbirds attacking a savoury dish per se.

What would you say is the problem?

    An age issue? Income? Intelligence?

Much as I'd love to think it is, it can't all be about me.
Kev, for me at least its original thought provoking writing. I manage to avoid all the 'culture' bits of the papers most of the time so no harm to me to have to go and listen to a bit of the chieftains again on youtube to establish that I never liked them anyway

I only saw them once. In Slane. '82. Opening the bill for the Stones. Mick is seemingly a big fan. They finished their set by introducing the next act, George Thoroughgood and the Destroyers. This was followed by The J. Geils Band and then the Stones.

Can't remember too much about the Chieftains, but I do remember the J. Geils band belting out "Angel is a Centrefold".

Very Drumcree that. Note the Lambeg beating time.

And, of course, Ry Cooder has always been closely asociated with Kipling.

What exactly were you smoking in the mountains of Morocco?

Go on Sam ye wild thing. Clap those hands.

The pipe band I witnessed looked like they were just back from erecting concentration camps for the Boer

I would ask you to fully explain, or else withdraw the "kept catholics" thing.

I have listened on and off to the Chieftains for many years, and they seem to be prefectly legitimate traditional musicians in the tradition of O Riada and Ceoltas (or are they "kept" as well?)

Here's a clip for you Sam with all the offensive gobdaw buffoonery in it.

Looking at the watch, tossing a coin, ringing a mobile.

I would see my post as a full explanation.

Don't think anyone ever accused O Riada of buffoonery.

Once you have reread the piece, watch Maloney's dumbass ariticide in the youtube clip above.

Then you can withdraw your request for withdrawal.

It's not my kind of thing really (though I did enjoy the fine piano playing) but I can't saw I saw anything offensive in it. Or anything you could describe as buffoonery .. any more than any stage act. In fact, I think that of all the things that could possibly offend me on the planet today the Chieftains would be very close to the bottom of the list.

Are you having a bad day?

I've a large grin on my face.

But as I said in the piece what I find most offensive is that when presented with the possibility of true beauty, they opt for buffoonery.
And that should be a crime punishable by 20 years of Jury's cabaret.

I'd say you are wasting your time trying to talk sense to your man! Chieftains have made outstanding contribution to Irish music over the decades and are well respected across the spectrum. Their anniversary album contains some excellent stuff from indie and alternative country artists.

As for Kev's references to fascism, they are contemptible. Stick to supporting your local hash dealer

I tell you the sort of "indie and alternative" I witnessed was of a calibre you would get from "a local hash dealer."
