The Cork Mother Jones festival will be held in Cork City from Tuesday, 31st July to Thursday, 2nd August marking the 175th anniversary of the birth of Mary Harris on the Northside of Cork 175 years ago. Mary Harris, or Mother Jones as she was to become known.

Mary Harris Jones is one of the heroines of early history of the North American trade union movement, particularly United States miners. She is still known as “The Miner’s Angel” and is remembered in the US as an iconic figure of late 19th and early 20th century United States history. She was once labelled as "the most dangerous woman in America" and to this day is revered by trade unionists and workers throughout North America from Canada down to Mexico where she spent some time with revolutionaries at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Cork Mother Jones Festival will feature the Irish premiere of a film documentary "Mother Jones, America's Most Dangerous Woman" with presentation and discussion by film maker Rosemary Feurer, a festival of music and song with local singers / musicians and the great Andy Irvine who will perform in the iconic setting of the historic Shandon (Church of Ireland) church, home of world famous the Shandon Bells.

The highlight will be the unveiling of a commemorative plaque to Mother Jones, jointly by committee members Cllr. Ted Tynan (Workers' Party councillor whose motion to City Council set the event in train) and Jim Nolan (Chair of Blackpool Festival). This will take place at 7.30pm on 1st August 2012 at John Redmond Street, Shandon, Cork.

Well according to Wikipedia it is.

The magazine was named after Mary Harris Jones, called Mother Jones[6], an Irish-American trade union activist, opponent of child labor, and self-described "hellraiser." She was a part of the Knights of Labor[7], the Industrial Workers of the World[7], the Social Democratic Party[7], the Socialist Party of America[7], the United Mine Workers of America[7], and the Western Federation of Miners[7]. The stated mission of Mother Jones is to produce revelatory journalism that in its power and reach informs and inspires a more just and democratic world.[8]
