I'm not surprised that Enda is against gay marriage.
I would imagine that the majority of TDs & Senators are likewise against gay marriage.
This is based on their age profile & the doctrine of the superstitions to which they adhere.
Political pragmatism will also affect TDs decision.
I would think that the percentage of the electorate that are trenchantly opposed to gay marriage significantly out numbers the proportion of the electorate that fervently support gay marriage.
There are a lot of people in the middle that support gay marriage but it is not a vote deciding issue for them.
I believe the anti-gay marriage faction will be much more active & will predominately be whipped into a fury from the pulpit.
Apart from that there will be non-superstitious homophobe groups.

Ultimately taking a stand against gay-marriage will be more of a vote-getter & the raison d'être of politicians is to get re-elected.

The reason Enda is probably taking a stance against is because of the votes. Toeing the populist line to please crusty ivory tower living cat-licks that vote for him he knows he would probably alienate himself if he was to bring in such legislation. Why should some crusty old batchelor get to decide if I can marry the man I love or not? Why? If the anti gay marriage faction want a fight I will give them one, in fact if the rest of the cat-lickers want a row I will give them one and they better not start because I will fuckin finish it I am that wound up about this issue. This is the next step in civil rights and not a decision for the rest of the island of Ireland to make. If gay people took up armed resistance tommorrow I would understand. Actually screw it Im disillusioned with the whole gay community at the moment. One side fights with brimstone and fire and the other one fights back with Kylie and glitter. What are we to do?....

Apologies that post is a rant but watching VB tonight I was seething with anger...

Interesting trivia from Ursula Tipp last night about Gilmore's German counterpart Guido Westerwelle who was married in 2010

I doubt there's much of a vote bonus in opposing gay marriage. Most people just take it as being a natural progression of the equality agenda.

Of course Enda himself could be an old FG reactionary under his mild mannered veneer. Keeping the Gay Mitchell wing of the party onside comes before Gay rights.

The more I see of Enda the more conservative he seems to become.

There is much unpleasantness under Kenny's idiot veneer imo.

Still an idiot mind - which probably makes him more dangerous

Is there any Fine Gael heads in the Iona Institute?

Gay Mitchell has been linked to them but denies any involvement with them. He hosted a conference on their behalf in 2007 titled The Fragmenting Family.

He got the Presidential nomination from the party so there's a very conservative wing in the FG party. He didn't get the FG vote though, so the old fossils in the party are out of touch with the FG voters. Given Dana's poor showing in the same election, it's doubtful that morally conservative Ireland has much of a vote at all.

Dana was great, she burnt herself out talking all fluffy et al and fell flat on her face. Was hilarious to watch. I read a few things online about Gay Mitchell but found no conclusive evidence at all about his membership of the group. While there is not a huge conservative element in FG its still off putting to see there is a conservative wing at all.

There is much that remains hidden from view in the FG party. There are various wings in it, the Social Democrat wing of it had to fight the Christian Democrat wing in Garret Fitzgeralds time.

I haven't seen any sign of that Social Democratic wing in them for a long time, a few individuals maybe on certain issues. They're Conservative Christian Democrats but they're not going to throw away votes by being OTT about it.

Gays, gays, jesus they´re all over the bloody place
(Reuters) - Democratic Representative Barney Frank wed his longtime partner, James Ready, on Saturday, becoming the first sitting congressman to enter into a same-sex marriage.
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick officiated the ceremony and added some levity by saying Frank, 72, and Ready, 42, had vowed to love each other through Democratic and Republican administrations alike, and even through appearances on Fox News, according to Al Green, a Democratic congressman from Texas.

Anyone ask Enda for his opinion on this?
