A politician's raison d'être is to get re-elected.
If I was the political advisor to a mature rural TD I would advise him to limpet to the RCC, denounce the abomination of homosexuality, raise hysteria about farmers losing their holdings to gay fellows with tight trousers & no socks from the cities & oppose gay marriage.
It is a completely different situation for younger urban TDs.
I believe there is a significant urban/rural divide on this issue or more accurately TDs will convince themselves that it is an urban/rural issue & they will do what is advantageous to them.
This fight will get nasty.
It should not be.
It should not even be a fight.
I don't believe there is any need for a debate.
But the RCC have not gone away.
It is one thing covering up deviant priests but it is another thing entirely keeping quiet on gay marriage.
The RCC have been in the scaremongering business since its inception & to show it has any modern relevance & a future in Ireland it will vehemently oppose this proposal.
The superstitious who habitually attend veneration will follow suit & oppose gay marriage.
I hope you win the fight & as of now I think you will.
But the unknown quantity is how undignified the RCC & rural conservatism will get.
