Default Eamonn Gilmore tells us its time gay marriage...

    http://www.thejournal.ie/eamon-gilmo...06078-Jul2012/

Normally this would have been put under the gay rights thread but this is a moment that I would like to share with people. Gilmore is considering gay marriage, which is the last great civil rights movement , by putting it before the constitutional committee. The vast majority of people under the comments section are supportive but then again there are a few intent on spoling the party...

Something like that might soften the blow of the budget... or stop us talking about it.

    But you can't trust Gilmore.

He'll say that anything should be "taken into consideration" by constitutional conventions until the cows come home if it keeps bondholders being paid billions off the front pages and scrutiny of labours flip flopping at bay.

    Fluffy,

I don't think Gilmore himself is considering a gay marriage, merely legalising it as an option for others. Most probably homosexual people.

I think this is the sort of issue that the church leaders will use to rally the 'faithful' & will lead to an invigorated church.
I wonder will this mean that Westboro Baptist Church campaigners will arrive on these shores & make our own brand of superstitious nuts appear moderate?

It was also reported on the news this am that Benedict is coming to Ireland.
Surely this is just a coincidence?

Campaigners claim that God created Adam & Eve, not Adam & Steve.
How can followers claim that their god is the master of all creation & at the same time say he didn't create Steve?

God created Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve? Nonsense. If you believe he created two people you must also believe he gave them free will. At last after long, long centuries we are approaching equality. It will be a steep hill but marriage if its what a couple want should not be up to the state, or church, to refuse.

    Ah ha Bernadette,

What if a man wants to marry a horse?
Or a brother wants to marry his brother?
Or a council worker wants to marry his shovel?

For every appeal for inclusivity that is made Leviticus' "abomination" & "common sense" will be thrown back at you.

If I get an opportunity to vote on this I'd vote yes.

But as Saoirse go Deo intimated, this might be this government’s Rule 42.
This is something that should happen, but it doesn't directly impact upon the vast majority of us.
It may just be a useful political hobby horse to keep something that has more universal effect like Increased PRSI or the household tax removed from the political agenda.

As far as I'm concerned, this shouldn't even be debated.
There should be no articles in 'The Irish Catholic'.
No letters to the Irish Times.
Listeners should not be wasting their time ringing Joe Duffy.

Gay marriage should be allowed & we should move on.

I don't believe any legislation will make gay marriage compulsory, so if you don't want gay marriage, don't have one.

But it is being debated. Its a sign of how far we have come that so far today I have not heard a reference to Leviticus, which is not to say it won't be pulled out eventually. Another sign is the number of people, everyone I heard, who say "I've nothing at all against gays. But!

Each to their own Monetpenny, as long as all partners are able and old enough to consent and no one is harmed.

bernadette is right there... neither the state nor the daft cult own the estate of marriage. That belongs to the people and custom. If the people decide that a gay couple should have the right to say vows in their community and make a commitment to each other what business is it of the TD or the priest?

This is one of those areas where the TD and the priest cannot help but be behind the times. I agree also that it is the last fight for civil rights for a section of the community that has always been around and much of the time been made unhappy for no good reason.

    Time it was sorted.
Think National. Act Local. Oh- and superstition is just the dark matter of human history.

One thing I've never understood in this 'debate'. Some of the loons behave as if their marriage is somehow threatened if a gay couple decide to say vows in another corner of the country. How, I wonder, is the loon marriage threatened in this instance?

And is it strong enough in the first place that it can be threatened by the happiness of two people the loons have never met?

Bah. Humbug. Get it done Gil;more and get the state out of the hearth and the loons swept out of the chimneys of people they don't know.

Hilarious thing is that Gillymore is debating the issue, such an issue such as this being the last great civil rights movement should just be changed and equality given. Mickey mouse commentators as was seen from Paddy Scully in the Journals website should not have a say in who I choose to marry. I think a lot of loons find the idea reprehensible as all they focus on is **** sex as if we are all sex mad addicts. While throwing the Leviticus passage around about the back passage, **** sex was banned back then as it was difficult to maintain hygeine in the times of the zombie carpenter as water was not plentiful but the religious right have take it upon themselves to see it as something different.

I don't want to go into the sex act side of things, but anyone who believes no heterosexual people never have or ever would have **** sex, needs to think again.

Of course all homosexual sexuality activity is a 'sin'.
I'm not basing it on what Leviticus describes as the 'abomination' but on what our religion teacher, a priest, told us.
He said that all sexual activity that could not possibly lead to conception was a sin.
That deems a lot of consensual heterosexual activity sinful.
It is what makes contraception sinful.

The reason the RCC was able to promote the ‘rhythm method’ as a sinless form of contraception was that it could still lead to pregnancy.
Why does the RCC have such a penchant for promoting flawed philosophies & methodologies?

The RCC will not concede on this issue without a vicious fight.
They cannot be passive on this & to show that they have at least a modicum of modern relevance they have to vigorously oppose it.
We will see scare mongering from the pulpit & we will be advised to protect our children by opposing this abomination.
I would imagine that this proposal will not have universal support amongst deputies as our elected representatives will reason that those most likely to vote, the old & the conservative, will not be in favour of same-sex marriage.

Is not all the teachings of the church against homosexuality based on Leviticus though? They tell us about sodom and gomorrah etc.?
