Default Sirius B - The Dog Star

Many thanks to Trow for her help in giving me links and guidance on this. This was first raised in the posts that Trow posted and others here and the recurring theme was that of Sirius B. Sirius B is close to us , putting this in the context of the galaxy being infinite this means it is more or less our next door neighbours. These are trivial though in comparison to some of the links that star has to various aspects of culture here on Earth.

The Native Americans and the the Chinese both referred to Sirius B as the dog star or the wolf star. The native Americans believed that the dog star was a protector while the Chinese looked upon as a "celestial wolf". The most interesting information comes from though the Dogon and the Sumerians whom both had an advanced understanding of the star before modern astronomy would have touched it. The Dogon knew of the existence of a second star that was Sirius B before modern astronomy discovered it. In Sumeria , this is the best, the star descended for the hero Gilgemesh and he and fifty people descended into the heavens in a ship to the heavens.

In the Sumerian Civilization, predating the Egyptians, their epic poem Epic of Gilgamesh describes a dream of Gilgamesh where the hero is drawn irresistibly to a heavy star that cannot be lifted despite immense effort.
This star descends from heaven to him and is described as having a very 'potent essence' and being "the God of heaven". Gilgamesh had for his companions, 50 oarsmen in the great ship, Argo, a constellation bordering Canis Major, where Sirius is found.
Is there more to this star than an astronomical explanation?

This is probably the star where the Cathar elders went after escaping through the wormhole on Montsegur in 1244.

However, be careful. The Grand masonic lodge on Molesworth St is known to be keeping an eye on people who ask too many questions about Sirius B.

If you really want to get into what the Dogon etc. knew long before modern science ever managed to "discover" things, here's few reading bits for those cold, wet summer nights you guys are experiencing these days

COSMOLOGICAL ORIGINS OF MYTH AND SYMBOL (Laird Scranton, Pub.: Inner Traditions Int)
SACRED SYMBOLS OF THE DOGON (Laird Scranton, Pub: Inner Traditions Int)
SCIENCE OF THE DOGON (Laird Scranton, Pub: Inner Traditions Int)

Related to all of this are the writing by Zecharia Sitchin, linguist who was involved in catalogueing and desciphering the enormous find of the intact library of the city of Nineveh in the now Iraqi desert. Especially his "Earth Chronicles" series (6 books?) are quite a read, as is the "Lost book of Enki", the diary of the "God" Enki who genetically modified humans so that they could reproduce. He has a lot to answer for, so has Enki!

    Enjoy!

Quote...From the dawn of civilization to modern times, from remote tribes of Africa to the great capitals of the modern world, Sirius was – and still is – seen as a life-giver. Despite the disparity between cultures and epochs, the same mysterious attributes are given to the dog star, which can lead us to ask: how can all theses definitions synchronize so perfectly? Is there a common source to these myths about Sirius? The dog star is invariably associated with divinity and is regarded as a source of knowledge and power. These connections are particularly evident when one examines the teachings and the symbolism of secret societies, who have always taught about a mystical link with this particular celestial body. Is there a secret link between human evolution and Sirius? Unlocking this secret would mean unlocking one of humanity’s greatest mysteries. unquote.

Sirius B in some ways surely the most mysterious of stars. He has such a history here. Its possible to try and demystify it. People travelled far more than we know or accept obviously taking their faith and lore with them, and since we all have the stars in common its possible each place or tribe evolved its own similar theories. Its also possible there is a deeper less understandable meaning.

I will check out the links!

I have heard vaguely about this- Sirius B something to do with some tribe in some parts of Africa.

I came across in parts re Crsytal skulls and Hanock's books on early civilization particularly Eygpt and their knowledge of exact measurement re construction of pyramids. That said, it's a feat achieved without the use of computer or technology.

Without material things, operating according to the laws of physics, you wouldn't have a whole to be personal about.

Dr Finkelstein at the British Museum is very interesting on the subject of Gilgamesh. Cool thing about Gilgy is that his story was reverberating around Asia for a thousand years before it was ever etched onto a tablet. Finkelstein is good on this subject and he has an impressive beard and I didn't get where I am today by dissing academics with impressive beards.

    a paper on Gilgamesh... http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/3251/1/GilgameshWhat'sNew.pdf

Who Finkel is- sexy job title I have to say; 'Dr Finkel specializes in ancient Mesopotamian medicine and magic, and is also interested in literature, religion and the history of ideas in this part of the world. He is also interested in the history of board games throughout the world, and especially the preservation of traditional board games in many non-western societies. He has participated in the Museum websites about Mesopotamia and Games.' http://www.britishmuseum.org/about_u...ng_finkel.aspx

Actually he's a bit of a hero it has to be said....
Think National. Act Local. Oh- and superstition is just the dark matter of human history.

You find the most interesting characters Capt Con. Finkel indeed. Medicine and Magic. Must read up more on him over the coming months. Nice one.

Did'nt the game of chess originate in Asia? 8 pieces on the original board which may have been the ground. I'll check it out with him.
