    Default Newly Elected Mayors 2012

Some interesting new mayors elected tonight

    http://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/c...rs-556716.html

Former rugby international and Labour Councillor Gerry McLoughlin is the new mayor of Limerick he takes over from Fine Gael's Jim Long.

In Donegal, the first ever Labour Councillor has been elected as Lord Mayor in Frank McBrearty Junior.

While in Dublin, Fine Gael councillor Naoise O Muirí has been chosen for the office, replacing outgoing Labour mayor Andrew Montague.

Fianna Fáil councillors refused to take part in the vote claiming Dublin needs a directly elected mayor with executive powers.

I find it a bit disconcerting using the term mayor. All of our political terminology is as gaeilge and to use this term just makes me think of london, or new york maybe. The question is, why are we not using an irish term for this office???

ps. dont go berrating me with the irish translation of the english word etc. it comes from latin ffs

    The Galway advertiser also notes

A fruitful night on the committee front and there are wonderfully exotic conferences to be attended far far away, with expenses.

The real business of mayoral election night is on those fronts. The Mayoral election is but a smokescreen. The cutest cllrs will end up on several committees, having worked out which of them meets the most frequently and most importantly, how far away those meetings are held.

Its a pointless position, parties just pass it around.

Would anyone like to see directly elected mayors?

    Fianna Fáil "tantrum" in Donegal

    http://www.anphoblacht.com/contents/...Hu_Wug.twitter

PEOPLE who voted for Fianna Fáil county councillors in Donegal might be wondering why they bothered after the party whip threatened they will make the council unworkable because they lost the vote at this week’s AGM to have a second FF mayor in this term of the council.

Fianna Fáil whip Ciarán Brogan said the Soldiers of Destiny won’t be turning up for key meetings.

“Fianna Fail will no longer be turning up for budget meetings or the development plan,” he said. “Fianna Fáil will no longer be here for making up numbers.”
    Sinn Féin say

“For the first time in the history of Donegal, every grouping in the council will have a year as mayor," the Sinn Féin councillor said.

“Fianna Fáil had it first, followed by Sinn Féin. Fine Gael have just completed their year. Labour have just been appointed for this year and the last year will go to an Independent councillor. That is power sharing at its best.

“This is a move away from the one-party rule that Fianna Fáil had implemented in Donegal County Council and our four town councils for decades. It is a welcome change.”

I would love to see directly elected mayors, one for each of the 26 counties of this state. They should replace the existing managers and mayors/Cathaoirleach, combining them into a single office.

Sounds like FF alright. When things don't go their way they resort to spitting out their dummy. Pathetic. Ireland should never forget the carnage they've wrought to this state.
