Constituency Changes .. Happy or Unhappy?

I'm happy for once .... Dublin South Central.... down from 5 to 4 ..... Terenure and Kimmage cut off and going to Dublin South East (Dublin Bay South).

This leaves The Liberties, Ballyfermot Inchicore, Drimnagh and Crumlin together meaning we could have 4 left-wing TDs elected next time out.

Most affected Eric Byrne TD .... will have to go in with Ruairi Quinn TD and Kevin Humpreys TD. Somehow I can't see Labour winning 3 out of 4 in Dublin Bay South next time out.

I am in Mayo and am not happy.

1. Census should be taken on a saturday rather than a Sunday night. Many from Mayo have gone back to third level education in Galway, Dublin etc by Sunday night. This inflates pop figures in Galway, Dublin etc and deflates it artificially in Mayo, Leitrim, Roscommon etc.

2. I believe County boundaries should be kept as far as possible. If an extra portion were required the Ballaghadereen area in Roscommon should be considered. That area was part of Mayo until a landlord had it changed to Roscommon to save on rates. B'hadereen still part of Mayo GAA

Approx 10,000 pop of South Mayo going into Galway West. I.e. about 6000 votes

E O'Cuiv lives just over the Galway border in Clonbur. Will get support amongst t he 6000.

FG will have to try to switch their support to Galway candidates, all of whom are far from South Mayo

FG had a great campaign in last GE with a wave of support for a Mayo Taoiseach, and elected four.

Will be more difficult this time.

Calleary held his vote for FF. Last GE FF also had an able young barrrister Lisa Chambers who polled about 3500 altho she came into the fray at the last minute.

I think the whole sligeach liatroim dún na ngall cabhan business is a hames. In fact it stinks. Chopping up bits of counties is not on, if they wanted to do it do it with one county, cabhan or dún na ngall. In fact I dont see why cabhan is included at all. A bit suspicious to me. They could've left cabhan muinachain i reckon and just have sligeach liatroim dún na ngall.

Maybe theres some agena with the whole cabhan thing.. any ideas??

The Commission is supposed to be independent and therefore without any agenda.

It replaces some notorious gerrymandering of constituency revisons, especially the Tullymander many years ago.

I do agree that as far as possible county boundaries should be kept. Poor effort with Cavan Monaghan

Are we labeling the Irish Labour Party as left-wing? That said I hope to live long enough to see even one Irish constituency free of TDs from either Fianna Fail or Fine Gael!
