Some Background on the ex senator
He spent millions of €uro on a large field in Patrick Kavanagh country that is now worth only a fraction of its cost. Senator Francis O'Brien (67) had hoped to make a windfall through land rezoning but he was undone by the determined opposition of the local community. The senator bought the field on the outskirts of the tourist village of Inniskeen in Co Monaghan from a local farmer shortly before the county council was due to vote on a new development plan. But locals realised the number of houses in the village could rocket from 121 to 1,000 if the fields owned by Mr O'Brien and other landowners were rezoned. And they began a campaign to halt the rezoning.

He's now been charged with extortion relating to amounts in excess of €100K.

RTE wouldn't name him this morning - but since then the Dundalk Democrat tweeted the name.

We seem to have more than one thread on this. Should I merge them ?

Well, that is a new development. Do you know what the charges are ?

I'm going to merge the threads on the Senator, for easier reading back over the history.

Paul Williams had a story on this in the Sunday World last year:
According to Mr Williams’ article in the Sun, 69-year-old O’Brien was quizzed as part of an investigation launched after a civil servant complained that the former senator had demanded to be paid €100,000.
He had allegedly warned the public official that his bosses would otherwise be told of an incident in which he was reputed to have disposed of certain documents, contrary to the regulations in the government department in which he worked.
The Sun also states that it has learned that the civil servant referred to was in fact never in breach of any departmental regulations.
Another businessman had been arrested a number of days after Mr O’Brien was questioned, and both had been released

    Francis pleads guilty.
A retired Fianna Fail senator has pleaded guilty to a charge of demanding €100,000 with menaces in Co Monaghan. Francis O’Brien (70), a father of four, of Corwillan, Latton, Castleblayney, County Monaghan has been remanded on continuing bail to the November 12th sitting of Carrick-on Shannon Circuit Court.Mr O’Brien was an Oireachtas Senator from 1989 to 2011.
He is charged with attempting to make gain for himself or others, by making an unwarranted demand for €100,000 (£85,000) from Michael Heelan, with menaces, at Tullyvaragh Lower, Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan on 13th April last year.
Mr O’Brien appeared briefly standing in the body of Monaghan Circuit Courtroom in Monaghan Town today as the charge was read out to him by the Clerk of the Court.
“How do you plead?” Mr O’Brien was asked.
    “Guilty,” replied Mr O’Brien quietly.
Senior counsel for the defendant, Mr Jonathon Kilfeather then requested that Mr O’ Brien’s case be adjourned and transferred to a sitting of Carrick-on-Shannon Circuit Court on November 12th. There was no objection from Mr Frank Martin BL instructed by State Solicitor,Mr Barry Healy. Bail conditions imposed on the former senator from a previous sitting remain in place.
Two other co-accused in the case Michael Marron (56) of Taghart North, Shercock, County Cavan and Raymond McCaughey (57) of Drumganus, Broomfield, County Monaghan have had their cases adjourned to a future sitting of Monaghan Circuit Court. Similar bail conditions also remain on both defendants
