I think the meeting is inevitable and I don't think Robinson would have said anything to rock the boat.
It may not be this year but it must happen if SF are to grow into an all Ireland party. Its time for them to grow up.

Being discussed today by Sinn Fein membership -

Mary Lou McDonald was interviewed on RTE today, and was clearly quite wary of feelings about the proposal for Martin McGuinness to meet, and shake hands with, Queen Elizabeth.

How do people feel about this?
And would he just be meeting the boss ? There is a fairly widely held belief that McGuinness has been an agent for the British for a long time.
Ah sure why not, bygones and all that.

The Queen came here and did apologise. There was a statement of regret (something Shinners do well ) for the heartache caused etc etc. In this modern era perhaps we should let bygones be bygones. Maybe though as a Dub Im a little removed from the whole scene. I dont know really....

Surely there will be others very offended at the very idea of her majesty shaking hands with Martin.
I suppose Sinn Fein have noticed the angst amongst some and are trying to find a way of removing baggage for electoral purposes

I had a thread on this ages ago!
Yes it will happen, was decided ages ago today was just a formality, was obvious after Bodenstown. Grassroots very angry at the sham "consultation" that went on last night.
I don't think it should because some good people will leave the party because of it.

So Marty drew the short straw, well done him and about time.
I admit I was wrong about it. I thought SF would rat, again.
Yes, I think so, She came here last year and bowed before a monument to the 1916 dead.
She also apologised for the past, so its time to move on.
Oul Martin will charm her!!!!!!!!!!!!
what would Bobby Sands say about this

He should if he feels it's appropriate, reconciliation is good as long you don't sell out. There are no angels on either side, I find McGuinness to be an impressive operater, maybe a little too impressive. I'm happy enough to give him the benefit of the doubt for now.
It's either reconciliation or confrontation that are going to bring about a resolution of the NI conundrum. A black and white solution is unlikely. I personally think a form of joint sovereignty is going to be an intermediate solution on the road to a UI.
Apologies for re-starting this topic. I've merged the new thread with your thread.
I'm quite sure McGuinness is an agent, in the sense that he agrees with British policy for the north and has done his best to implement it, rather than pursue the aims of Republicanism. I base that view in part on the long interview he gave to Dunphy on RTE a couple of years back. He volunteered the information that he had been communicating with the British without knowledge or authorisation of his organisation, from very early on. Also, I base it on the political course on which he steered Sinn Fein.
I think it is wrong that he should meet her. Sorry doesn't mean much when the Dublin Monaghan bombing files remain closed to us. Amongst many other reasons.

Cactus, over the last 30 years I have witnessed Republicans and pseudo-republicans try to demonstrate how much more republican they are than other republicans.
I have also witnessed that those talked the most did the least.
It is really irritating to hear Pub-Republicans criticise men who spent half their lives in jail for the beliefs or on the run from the RUC, the UDR and the British Army.
Talk is cheap. ..... Now we have Keyboard warriors trying to prove that the IRA were wrong to fight British repression ....... and now they are wrong to engage in the Peace Process.
