His political record is bloody. It's one thing having all the right connections to keep yourself on TV and radio but who's going to vote for him?

yes yes, but is there really a gap in the market? The dear coping classes are well catered for.
His support could be well over estimated by his ego an access to the press

trouble is there is a gap in the market,a gap that does not need to be filled with policies, just soundbites and "logic"...I think Declan Ganly and Libertas proved that a few times, McDowell,Ganly and possibly O Cuiv could poke up a bit of support for a new catch-all populist party, there are a few more out there ready and willing ... Ross...Ming...Lowry...Gummidge, and a few dissaffected F.G'ers could be thrown in to the mix, all self servers with an agenda that can be moulded to suit that gap.

Will Mickey Mc make room for O'Cuiv in his new Party?

Stage being set for PD nua

At Leinster House there is frequent coffee-break speculation about the likelihood of former Tanaiste and Progressive Democrat founder Michael McDowell, and others such as the businessman and anti-EU treaties campaigner Declan Ganley, emerging to front a new party.

There's one correction I'd make to Downing's article:-

"More recently, the Progressive Democrats ran from December 1985 to November 2009, and left a considerable mark scar on our politics."
