Default Slovenia Today - General Strike and Mass Protests Against Austerity

Can't find much on this at the moment, but there was a General Strike today and at least 80,000 people on a protest in Lubljana.

I remember being in that wonderful country in the early 2000s ... the alpine vistas, mercs everywhere as common as dirt as opposed to the Irish version/notion ... and wonderful Ljubljana

And then they joined the Germanic Union in 2004 .... yeah ........

they are facing the same belt tightening measures as all other states "But Slovenia faces similar belt-tightening to most other countries in the 17 member bloc, with it’s 2011 deficit reaching 6.4 of GDP. Officials plan to cut it in half this year."

Note, Slovenes are paid roughly 1/3 of Irish wages across all sectors, they cut people off SW after 3 months, self employed pay "260/month for taxes regardless of income that month. Politicians are paid about 40k/yr. A friend moved there 2 years ago. She can't find a job, she is told, politely, that she can learn the language but not take their jobs. She is currently on a TEFL course.
On the other hand, their is a high level civic-mindness, a lot of local pride in the towns and villages, the streets are spotless, the bus service is excellent, integrated ticketing - bus, library & car parks, roads in reasonably good shape etc. They drink wine at lunch, hardly ever rains, the backdrop to the airport is the Alps, which can be reached in 1 hour's drive away. Food is delicious, even for *hush.. vegetarians*..
They grown their own food on available patches of land...
According to said friend, there seems to be less foreign investment in Slovenia, internal manufacturing seems to be mostly Clio cars. She also reckons it takes a bit longer for problems here to move across Europe to get to them.

Don't worry. That's what's coming down the tracks in Ireland. They are taking things step by step to wear us down.

Default Maidir Le: Slovenia Today - General Strike and Mass Protests Against Austerity

Demonstration of 70,000, according to this video. Largest demonstration in Slovenia since World War II. The marchers were calling for a wage increase (prices up 20% - 20%) and profit sharing for workers.

Well she is still on her course, she'll probably start teaching soon. Or she hopes that she will! There is an American school and British school the former is a lot more approachable and friendly. The latter was very snobbish towards her.

Yes but I will do a deal with them, they cut their wages to Slovene rates and I'll stop taking SW and find my own way. What d'a think of my chances

And we will be waiting for them when the time does come if they inflict the hardship on us. There is only so much we can take...
