    Teju Cole, author of Open City has written a *ahem* Twitter essay on American sentimentality towards Africa, as a reaction to Invisible Children’s Kony 2012 campaign:

    Seven thoughts on the banality of sentimentality.

    1- From Sachs to Kristof to Invisible Children to TED, the fastest growth industry in the US is the White Savior Industrial Complex.

    2- The white savior supports brutal policies in the morning, founds charities in the afternoon, and receives awards in the evening.

    3- The banality of evil transmutes into the banality of sentimentality. The world is nothing but a problem to be solved by enthusiasm.

    4- This world exists simply to satisfy the needs—including, importantly, the sentimental needs—of white people and Oprah.

    5- The White Savior Industrial Complex is not about justice. It is about having a big emotional experience that validates privilege.

    6- Feverish worry over that awful African warlord. But close to 1.5 million Iraqis died from an American war of choice. Worry about that.

    7- I deeply respect American sentimentality, the way one respects a wounded hippo. You must keep an eye on it, for you know it is deadly.

    Cole is a sometime contributor to NYT. Here's another view from a regular NYT columnist. I agree more though not completely with Cohen.
    Roger Cohen in The New York Times on #StopKONY Last week, the advocacy group, Invisible Children, uploaded a 30 minute video about African warlord Joseph Kony that went viral with the help of celebrity tweeters like Justin Bieber. Cohen writes (in an imitation of Twitter shorthand) "But this just in: RT button and #hashtags apparently operating with 10-year delay. And esp this: the celebs of the California-based White Savior Industrial Complex are terrible reporters. I mean, rly." Cohen describes the threat Kony posed to Uganda as overblown by the film and largely a problem of the past. But he defends the filmmaker Jason Russell against criticism that he oversimplifies Africa's problems with an outsider's perspective. "He's put his boots on the ground and he's doing something." It's up to other (perhaps more deserving) causes to mobilize as effectively.

    Default The thing about the thing is...

    Joseph Kony is a household name, thanks to a 30-minute YouTube video raising awareness about his brutal rebel group, the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). Tens of millions have seen the video after US charity, Invisible Children, released the clip online last week. On Tuesday, a charity organisation showed the film to the people who suffered at the hands of the LRA - Ugandans in the north of the country. Al Jazeera's Malcolm Webb reports from the town of Lira after the screening. For more reactions from Ugandans, visit our exclusive page: aljazeera.com/UgandaSpeaks

    Meanwhile...

    Photographer Glenna Gordon: "[The photograph] reinforces Jason, Bobby and Laren’s bad-ass-ness, making them look good even while it undermines their authority. It screams, look how cool we are! Check us out on the Sudan-Congo border! They are awesome dudes who are taking care of business. This appeals to the many young people who want to be bad-asses and pose like Rambo".

    Just for the record the guns and guerrillas are SPLA in a LRA camp.

    The snaps have an extra aura of meaning giving these very visible kids are calling for grunts in the bush.

    Now Kev Bar is not running a charity or a military intervention campaign.
    But I'm a boy. Not much of a badass. Not much of a Rambo.
    But a bit of a boy.
    And there are a few shots of me shooting AK-47s and M-16s around.

    Is that my rep shot full of holes?

    Seems to be true alright. Widely reported.
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...l5GS_blog.html
    The police statement said: “On Thursday, March 15, 2012 at about 11:30 a.m., San Diego Police officers responded to a radio call to check the welfare of a male at the intersection of Ingraham Street and Riviera Drive, in the neighborhood of Pacific Beach. Several callers reported the male was wearing only underwear and running into the street. One caller reported that the male had removed his underwear and was nude, perhaps masturbating, but that was not confirmed by responding officers. The callers reported the underwear-clad male was in the street, interfering with traffic, screaming, yelling incoherently and pounding his fists on the sidewalk. Several people in the area tried to calm the male but he continued to act in a bizarre and irrational manner.

    In a statement, Invisible Children CEO Ben Keesey said:
    “Jason Russell was unfortunately hospitalized yesterday suffering from exhaustion, dehydration, and malnutrition. He is now receiving medical care and is focused on getting better. The past two weeks have taken a severe emotional toll on all of us, Jason especially, and that toll manifested itself in an unfortunate incident yesterday. Jason’s passion and his work have done so much to help so many, and we are devastated to see him dealing with this personal health issue. We will always love and support Jason, and we ask that you give his entire family privacy during this difficult time.”

    Charlie Brooker deconstructs the BS as usual:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpuB11d0Gog"]Kony 2012 NWO sinister logo's and invisible children - 10 o'clock live 14.03.12 - YouTube[/ame]

    The awesome levels of cognitive dissonance in this image clearly point to a cult:

    Also the psychotic break looks to me like a common result of brainwashing when the buried remnant original personality decides the only thing that can be done is to flick the permanent off switch:

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhhRJoCQfn0]This message will self-destruct in 5...4...3[/ame]

    Finally, I'm noticing a lot of similarities between old reliable Scientology brainwashing techniques, and the propaganda methods now employed by various other very dubious Christian Evangelical, far-right, corporatist, green/vegan, contrived opposition, and all the other agents of confusion these days. Looks like Scientology was the petri dish, the research lab, and now the product is moving to trials on the general populace.

    Kony 2012, The sequel!!!!!!..............well maybe.
    http://www.theatlanticwire.com/globa...nal-was/50776/
    Once KONY 2012 broke all kinds of internet video records, a sequel was inevitable. Now that it's arrived -- with Mad Max-ish title Kony 2012: Part II - Beyond Famous, little sticks out from its 19-minutes other than the basic idea: "KONY 2012 was a good thing" and maybe, "Joseph Kony is still pretty awful.
