The message from the Olympics authorities is, 'If you're going to cheat, cheat well enough to break a record'.

“I think it is very destructive and very irresponsible of anybody to accuse people until they are proven guilty.”
Isn't a bit late to accuse someone when they have been proven guilty already?

Well the Chinese have put in a marvellous performance and they have been proven to be innocent of any charges that have been pretty much levelled against them. We are seeing a breakthrough also, the 15 year old Lithuanian girl who smashed the records and won the 200m womens freestyle (am I wrong on that?). The whole fiasco over drugs, sponsorship, allegations of cheating to avoiud playing opponents, the emotions everything is making this a weird Olympics. Watching the rower from Niger row even though he knew he had lost and was last still made my heart leap, that is what the Olympics should be about admist all the crap and corporate ***** we hear about every day of the week.

Ruta Meilutyte turned 15 only 3 weeks ago and it was 100m breaststroke, beating Rebecca Soni, she didn't even get within a second to the world record though. She didn't make the 200m final either (on tonight).

Very weird indeed. As far as I'm aware, there has been no positive test as of yet and we're almost one week into the Olympics. Now you can believe they're all very clean or there is a massive cover up... ignorance is bliss, as they say. The only "scandal" so far is surrounding the banned badminton players who deliberately lost their matches to meet "easier" opposition in the quarterfinals. While this may be despicable, it is not unusual in other sports, a flaw in the rules inviting athletes to exploit it. Most other athletes have actually petitioned to revoke the ban.

They keep the samples on ice for eight years (wonder why they keep them if they proved they were negative samples, are they thinking there is going to be drugs they cant detect yet?)

That's part of it. There is a thing called IGF-1 for instance which they know off, but it is notoriously hard and expensive to detect. Future tests may be cheaper?
The other reason is for samples that are found to be positive. It allows them to study rates of deterioration, long term effects, mutations, you name it. make no mistake, some of these guys are in fact guinea pigs for new stuff and samples can be used to develop new tests etc. Big business of course!

There's bad, there's very bad, and then there's the HOC (Hellenic Olympic Committee).

In a statement today, the HOC made it clear that under the pretence of "managing public money" it wants money back from athletes leaving the Olympic Village earlier than scheduled, due to non qualification for the next session, or injury, (or racism?) . Athletes will have to pay back 150€ out of 300€ – flat rate “pocket money’- the Committee had handed out in advance for their stay in London.

To explain this, the 300€ is "pocket money" that each athlete got for the full duration of the Olympics, or 20€ a day to spend on whatever they might want that isn't covered by the HOC as "expenses". Not included in those expenses are basic things like shampoo, tooth paste etc. You know, those little luxuries nobody really needs...

We know things are bad here, very bad. But this is simply ridiculous in the extreme. the maximum the HOC stands to gain out of this is just over 15,000€. That is if all had failed and returned to Greece a week ago.
