Fergus Finlay on Plank now claiming the Olympic team did all we could possibly ask of them.

Dungan saying there was no national celebration. There was, in Dublin. We stayed away in our thousands.

They did all we could possibly ask of them relative to what was invested in their preparation for the event.

Winners stand on the podium with gold around their necks. Losers whinge about how everyone else let them down.

The extent to which the Olympics is taken seriously in Ireland could be seen by the unseemly farce surrounding how, where and when we should "welcome" the participants back from London.

    A shambles, among many.

If we really took the Olympics seriously we'd be asking why we should welcome back those who performed so miserably.

Since we're bust and can't afford huge payouts for medals, maybe the threat of exile and eternal damnation will spur them on to success!

And if it works, we might apply this strategy to the public sector in general...

Hmmm, now there's an interesting way of looking at things. We sponsor the athletes so they become PS workers.

That means that they automatically become evil.

That allows us to pull any sort of accusation out of our arses and use it against them.

That compels us to join with our allies in UKIP to campaign against them and block them from competing in future Olympics.

No more problems about homecoming bashes and no endless whinges about how they would have won if only they weren't crap desperately unlucky that everyone was better.

€6m per medal and only one of them gold. Another €6.5m spent on people who failed to even qualify.

All that money spent with nothing to show for it and they still had the cheek to whinge that they weren't consulted about a parade.

Maybe I should have posted this in Goatstoe's Waste of Public Resources thread.

The problem of resources and how they are deployed isn't confined to Ireland.
Spare a thought for India, they won just six medals.

Why does India win so few medals?

The obvious question -- why does India, despite a population of over one billion, field so few medalists? -- is as frequently asked as it is difficult to answer. There's no consensus, no obvious explanation, no single unified theory of Indian Olympic under-performance. Though there are certainly some factors particular to India that might explain this trend, this story might say as much about the better-performing countries and their ability to exploit certain advantages that India lacks.

Well the cost of it could be slashed and the money used to identify talent whom could be potential athletes. If the funding went to universities and improved facilities there we could have a world class education system and a world class sporting system where athletes come out knowing that they have both a chance in the working world if the sporting careers does not work out.
