A woman from Roscommon, who mustn't get out much, is upset at sportswomen being called girls.

"Sir, – What will it take for male commentators to stop referring to world-beating professional sportswomen (such as Katie Taylor) as “girls”? Are sportsmen aged 26 referred to as “boys”? No. – Yours, etc,"

She must never have had the pleasure of hearing a mob of rat-arsed cretins 'singing' 'Come on ye boys in green' over and over and over again to the tune of Those Were the Days.

I guess I mustn't get out much either because I totally agree with her, but then again having followed women's tennis (WTA) for over 10 years it's not exactly a unique attitude from male commentators and sadly even some female commentators.

If you've never been treated to a rousing chorus or 50 of 'Come on ye boys...' you are indeed fortunate. It's almost enough to make one yearn for the polyglot sophistication of 'Olé olé olé.

He was their best player. And when you say that about a sub, then you are talking about the losing team.

And they really did deserve to lose.

John Joe lost in the final. He gets a silver medal. Hope he retires now.

They did, they wasted some opportunities that were few and far between. They all played as individuals, not as a team as they normally do. Juan and Rafael arguing was ridiculous and they lacked any sort of cohesiveness.

I've got to say it, its been a great Olympics, for us and for everyone.

Maybe we learned that however broke we are we have to put money in to get gold out. Maybe its because we were in the same time zone, whatever, its been one of the best.

    It has been fun.

    Why no open-topped bus?

Has there been some behind the scenes decision that we aren't to be trusted to go out en masse and welcome conquering heroes/heroines?

Its the closest thing we will ever have to a home Olympics, the irish athletes got more support in London than they will ever get anywhere else.

I think that helped us get an extra couple of medals.

Yep, who will ever forget the atmosphere at the Katie Taylor final? Its easy to forget or not notice the number of us who live in England but they don't forget their roots and they showed us. And so did the Brits, next to their own they supported us.

The Brits did give us support. Yesterday, in the 50 kilometre walk, the BBC commentator was saying how great it would be if Robert Heffernan could come ahead of the Chinese walker to claim bronze. Unfortunately, despite Robert's best efforts, he came in fourth in a great performance, a performance lauded by the BBC commentator as one of the best he had seen.
