Eamon O'Cuiv refused to give a commitment to a Yes vote earlier in the evening on TG4, according to PT there. Martin put on the spot![]()
This is going to be an awful farce
I love it...
Nice words from the guy who conspired only 2 months ago to cut the people out of the decision. Has he been on the phone to the US embassy already? In line with our public commitment, the Government has decided to consult the people by Referendum, and to seek their approval for the Treaty.
I dropped out of communism class because of lousy Marx.
Interesting that France may well have a new President by the time we get to vote - especially given some of the policies mooted.

The decision to hold the referendum 'risks an unprecedented fragmentation of the eurozone and a major clash with Germany. ' according to this report. The members of the Dail are described as a ashen-faced on Kenny's announcement.

I tend to agree with you PJ
The Telegraph say it would be politically untenable to leave us in limbo but I am sure they will press ahead regardless. This must be why they made it 12/15. To account for some needless democracy potentially interfering
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/f...ens-chaos.htmlIreland cannot stop the process since a quorum of 12 states brings the treaty into force, but it would be politically untenable to create a new eurozone structure that left one member in limbo.

The German ruling party stance is quite clear
However, Dr Michael Meister, a budget and finance spokesman for Dr Merkel’s ruling Christian Democrats (CDU) said: “Whoever doesn’t accept the treaty has no protection from the ESM bailout fund. If the Irish people think they don’t need any ESM protection they can, of course, reject the fiscal treaty.”
Dr Günther Krichbaum, CDU European spokesman in parliament, said the question Ireland had to vote on was: “Do we want to stand together, do we want a stable and prospering union from which future generations can benefit?”

The spin on this in the Indo is incredible. Under the headline "Kenny's bold poll gamble" we're told:-
"Yesterday Mr Kenny gave [those calling for a referendum] what they wanted. By doing so, he brilliantly wrong-footed those who had been calling for a referendum to approve the fiscal compact."
It's like saying a man falling off a horse is brilliant for hitting the ground.
Taking the only available option does not show that you're a brilliant political strategist.
