By that standard there would be very few statues in existence anywhere in the world. You'll find that there are thousands of monuments to people who were responsible for many deaths of innocent people.
In the case of Guevara he didn't hide the fact that he was responsible for the execution of traitors and deserters during the war for Cuba.

Curious to see Declan using this one as an objection:

Galway Labour who said this? "Cuban workers must start getting used 2 life in a collectivist regimen. By no means can they now go on strike"

I would have thought Deco would applaud that sentiment.

So knowing that, are you happy enough to have a statue erected to him? Hey I understand different people have different opinions of him, but his deeds are pretty well documented and he does not come out of it as a saint, it seems as long as the motives are good, then the deeds done are of no consequence. It's not often I am in step with the USA's policies, but on Cuba I certainly am. I love to visit there, but I sure would not want to be a citizen.

I'm not particularly keen on statues in general but if the good burghers of Galway think it will help the tourist trade then good luck to them

Wish people would just be honest and say it's about politics rather then pretending they give a hoot about civil/human rights

Agreed, lets hope if it goes ahead they also have the courage to put some truthful accounts on the plaque beneath it.

You don't believe that there ARE some people who care about civil rights, or is it that they just don't exist on this forum?

I think he does. It is the collectivism he objects to.

Where did you get that from?

Simply, most of the objectors are arguing from a dishonest position

    I forgot.
Collectivism doesn't allow the "tall poppies" more sun light.
