Default Bernadette McAliskey - Socialist Republican

Bernadette (TS) 21:30 Lelia Doolan's dramatic, vivid and moving portrait of Bernadette McAliskey, a socialist republican political activist. She served as a Member of Parliament at Westminster from 1969 to 1974 for the Mid Ulster constituency. At age 21, she was the youngest MP at the time, and remains the youngest woman elected. The film showcases the unique firebrand style of politics; at once compassionate, sincere, obstinate and unafraid. Celebrated as a hero by her own community and reviled by her opponents, who famously derided her as Fidel Castro in a mini-skirt, her charismatic political energy was never successfully subsumed into party politics.
This documentary was screened this evening on TG4 and was very interesting. If anyone can locate it online it would be much appreciated.

(Followed now by Mna na IRA - Martina Anderson)

Great show. I saw it at the Cork Film Festival and was very impressed with both the film and its subject. What is nice about Bernadette is that her socialism is at least as important to her as her republicanism, and she possesses a personal integrity untainted by political careerism or even thoughts of it. Her personal courage in the situations she found herself in, particularly her deep involvement in the hunger strikes solidarity campaigning which, as she pointed out in the film, exposed her and her family to both loyalist (unofficial) and British state (official) terrorism.

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing it again.
"It is we the workers who built these palaces and cities here in Spain and in America and everywhere. We, the workers, can build others to take their place. And better ones! We are not in the least afraid of ruins. We are going to inherit the earth; there is not the slightest doubt about that. The bourgeoisie might blast and ruin its own world before it leaves the stage of history. We carry a new world here, in our hearts."

Outstanding piece of television work, really shows up RTE for the incompetent overpaid neo liberal mouthpieces that they are!? No use of dramatic music or flashy screen work that is common place within RTE, which is a ploy to detract from the low level of knowledge and high level of "status quo" propaganda they present as "journalism". Unfortunately for Ireland we don't have enough people of the calibre of Bernadette Devlin, instead we got Joan Burton! Enough said!!!!!! p.s thought the leonard cohen music really added to the programme, great show tg4

Up on the TG4 player now.

Thought provoking and insightful piece of work concerning a true maverick in Irish politics. People like Devlin are few and far between in Irish political life, we really could do with more like her around.

The musical score for the film included contributions from Brian Eno.

Not sure the link I put up there goes directly to the documentary. Log on to TG4 player and scroll down and click on documentaries, you'll find it there.

Thank you. I've only seen the second half, so will be watching this again. It was on tv again last night and people mentioned it to me as an excellent film.

I would hazard a guess that the independent production company that made the programme has probably done stuff for RTE.

In fact I am pretty sure Lelia Doolan has worked for RTE.

The programme did show more livliness of mind than your critique.

    And on that subject:

    No use of dramatic music
p.s thought the leonard cohen music really added to the programme

No doubt if you heard Cohen on a RTE programme you would be moaning that the tax-payer was probably gauged to pay for it.

    Good programme though.

If I remember correctly, Lelia Doolan left RTE in the 1960s after they suppressed the consumer programme "Home truths" at the behest of advertisers.

She co-wrote a book called "Sit down and be counted" which I think is at least partly about that episode.

    That rings a bell.

What seems like a good documentary on McAliskey/Devlin on TG4 at the moment, narrated by herself.

Am watching now. I missed out on the beginning becauseI thought the title 'Bernadette' was something about Lourdes. She was a heroine of mine when she was Bernadette Devlin.

"Bloody Sunday was on the day simply on in a series of demonstrations against internment"

"Bloody Sunday was for me another turning point" "I reinforced the choice that I made."

PS. Lelia Doolan, the producer of 'Bernadette' remains a heroine of mine.
