The failure of our politicians to at the very least legislate in accordance with the X case 20 years ago, is indicative of the weak leadership we have had in this country in recent decades.

When they shot down Claire Dalys private members bill the Dail did itself a big dis service. There was a Fine Gael head on Newstalk this morning who wouldnt be drawn into a discussion on whether he believe it should be legislated for or changed in a referendum, he just spouted the party line. A womans choice is a womans choice and the state should not deny her. Its a big failure ont he part of the politicians to legislate for it and FG's whines about letting the church have their say is just pathetic...

There were problems with Clare Daly's bill, shoddy stuff (which is why I was against it). If it's worth doing its worth doing right.

While I can understand the pro life stance on healthy pregnancies, I'm afraid I just think it is unconscionably cruel to make women carrying fatally impaired foetuses go to term or to England. If a child is so severely handicapped as to make survival beyond a month or two impossible, why make her carry to term??

Surely even if we can't agree on choice for less serious issues, we could manage for this?? And for cases where illness of the mother makes continuing with the pregnancy a life threatening risk?

I'm afraid our politicians still live in fear of the crozier. After the child abuse scandals, could they not manage a bit more independent thought?

Think it's more a fear of those who fear the crozier. Every TD receives constant low level lobbying. Stacks of stamped postcards are left in churches for people to send on to their local rep etc.
One of the issues is one side (and I hate to suggests there are simply two sides) believing as long as the current uncertainty remains, abortion isn't happening. The reality tells a different story.

    It is. No doubt.

How so? The Irish Times summed it up nicely...

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/...reaking54.html
Ms Daly’s is seeking to introduce the legislation to “provide for termination of pregnancy where a real and substantial risk to the life of the pregnant woman exists” and to make provision “for the prevention of any curtailment, hindrance or preclusion of such treatment that may arise as a result of the pregnancy of the woman”.
What is wrong with that SgD? With all respect I disagree, it was straight forward and to the point. Around the time of the bill we had TD's like Mulheirn telling us it was the result of fornication etc etc. That is what I would take issue with a chara if I was you. That private members bill would have protected a mothers life.

Its dishonest and hypocritical to deny women the right to abortion in this country. In the name of a religion most of us don't respect anymore! disgraceful!

Women will not be prevented from getting abortions but they will be put to the added trauma of going away from their homes to get legal abortions in England.

Abortion is not a decision taken lightly and there is no sign of respect or care for women in those who deny them their right to choose. It also shows little sign of regard for the child, since a woman who knows she cannot raise a child in her circumstances is given the only option of adoption. Its almost the last relics of the laundries.

Far from being to our credit medieval attitudes like the anti abortionists shame Ireland with their aggressive and vociferous rhetoric.

More than 2,000 people marched for choice on abortion through Dublin City Centre yesterday - many joining on the route.

Was at the march yesterday and it was empowering. Met a lot of interesting people (including the International Communist Party = lol) but anyways there was an excellent atmosphere. Got chatting to Social Workers for choice, people from the gay community, USI and most surprisingly for me, members of the Labour Party who marched behind a banner. The abortion issue is very divisive for the Labour party internally a member told me when we were chatting about the issue. The march ended up on a street just on front of Merrion Square, it should have stayed on front. Still was a few good speeches from RBB, Claire Daly and a few other activists. Some plank with a camera called me a murderer and took my picture, Im sure I'll be a celebrity. A chant of "Keep your rosaries off our ovaries" and "No church, no state, let the women decide their fate" was met with a rousing chorus at the two preachers that were there.
