Default French Senate passes Armenian genocide bill

The French Senate voted late yesterday to criminalize any public denial of what new legislation calls the Ottoman Empire's genocide of Armenians, triggering fresh condemnation from modern Turkey.

It is already illegal in France to deny the Holocaust of World War II, a crime punishable by a year in prison and a fine of €45,000. The same punishment would be used under the Armenian legislation.

A statement from the Turkish Foreign Ministry stated, "Turkey is determined to take every step required against this unjust action, which disregards basic human values and public conscience."

Under pressure from Ankara the govt responded by changing the law to mean that to deny any genocide is going to mean a penalty but the Turkish govt is still not happy about this. The worst that will happen is Ankara recalls its ambassador and Paris recalls there. There may be an issue also with Turkish Airlines buying a few French aircraft but it will blow over quickly. Fair play to Sarko though, he is showing he does have a human side for a change when not trying to put Ireland over a barrel....

There French government stated yesterday that the law with its imprisonment and fine penalty will be in full force within two weeks.
Alain Joppe, The French Foreign Minister, is running interference with the Turkish government, claiming the law should have no bearing on their countries' friendly relationship.
The Socialists in France, hoping to replace Sarkosy in a few months time, are claiming it is to give advantage to Sarkosy as there are about half a million Armenians in France who can vote.
