ULA in Colleges?

A ULA college society has been in existence in NUIG since September last year. Its exact relationship to the ULA is relatively loose and unstructured, which I suppose, should be no surprise given the lack of structure within the ULA.

The society has followed the example of SWSS and SY in that membership of the society is not the same as membership of the ULA proper. That said, the vast majority of active members of the society are card-carrying ULA members.


Does anyone know of other such college societies?

Is it a good idea for the ULA to organise in campuses?

Has anyone any suggestions or comments for developing a ULA student or youth network?

I think it is a great idea and something that must be done in time for September 2012 when new term starts. There are a lot of independent student activists for which FEE is their only home. Such a network will be the engine for new generations and tiers of ULA activists. How about getting in touch with the steering committee and asking if you could hold a "ULA on Campus" talk?

Yes college cumanns for political parties should definitely be utilized. Students are often the most enthusiastic members of a party, also, they have a lot of free time too.

Be there, on freshers day, with a good table, and have a meeting, talk, or other event organised ready to publicise. Ask people to sign up to a contact list of people "interested in knowing more about the ULA" or in joining the ULA.

Have a very short leaflet (one side a4) ready on what students face and why they need to be part of a mass party, as well as supporting students organisations.

I've experience in setting up a table and recruiting people for Sinn Féin, if its anything like my college then its not just a case of turning up, you have to register your group beforehand and you have to be a member of the college. You can have outsiders come in and help though. In addition if you want to sign people up you have to charge them, four Euro in my colleges case.

There are often 2 freshers days a year in colleges, at the start of each semester, so there should be one around now.
