Many working people can't afford food and are relying on food charity.

Not surprising. The Dole is under £70 a week and OAPs get just over £400 per month. Far worse than here in many ways. And the much vaunted NHS has just as many waiting lists as the medical card holders face on the public health here.

And all this in a very rich country.

But how is rich defined.

If this was a third world country showing children hospitalised with malnutrition, people would be digging in their pockets to help out.

Is this going to be a global phenomena? The poor get poorer and the rich, richer. The refusal of politicians and economists to learn from history is turning the 21st century into the 19th century.

Rundown tenements, children neglected and malnourished parents unable to afford to feed their offspring. Education becoming a privilege not a right.

Read horrendous article on Bloomberg website today. Greece is at the stage where pharmacies are without medication and hospitals are borrowing from one another in order to get what they need and old people are having to do without.

Is this so called progress in the 21st century.

Greece is an awful mess. Kids are rooting around in bins and are being dumped on door steps of churches and foster homes. The world is majorly f*cked. Watching Star Trek first contact the other night, Picard comments to a woman "We come from the 24th centurey, the accumulation of wealth is no longer the definition of a man" or something along those lines.

The reasons for hunger are multiple. Increased oil costs, land desertification through building and tree felling, land in the former USSR falling into abandonment with the end of collectives, increased labour costs. The biggest reason is gross inequality.

There is easily scope for everyone on the planet to be well fed.

A co - op would solve a lot of issues and Im not going to say all. The land in Greece while poor due to the arid regions and extreme temperatures can still be farmed enough to produce enough of the basics. The breakdown of the basic family unit is the most tell tale sign that Greek society is on the verge of collapse.
