    China causing Big Pharma to sweat

    China has overhauled parts of its intellectual property laws to allow its drugmakers to make cheap copies of medicines still under patent protection in a move likely to unnerve foreign pharmaceutical companies.

    The Chinese move comes within months of a similar move by India to effectively end the monopoly on an expensive cancer drug made by Bayer AG by issuing its first so-called "compulsory licence".

    Similar action by China will ring alarm bells in Big Pharma, since the country is a vital growth market at a time when sales in Western countries are flagging.

    Irish pharma exports to the US down 30% in the first half of this year;
    According to the Irish Exporters’ Association’s half-year review, the Irish pharmaceutical sector experienced a “severe downturn” in exports to the US market in the first half of the year, though pharmaceutical exports to the EU grew by 6 per cent.

    The association’s chief executive John Whelan said the figures showed that “Ireland’s over-dependency on pharma exports to the United States was coming home to roost”.

    We need to Legalise the weed immediately. This will

    Boost tourism

    Foster a brand new medical Marajuana growing / exporting industry

    Free up expensive prison spaces

    Save loads of money on policing

    Destroy a lucrative gangland income stream

    Keep the small local cafe businesses on their feet and create employment

    New opportunities for businesses selling head shop gear

    Hemp clothing industry etc might take off in parallel

    bring in lots of extra tax

    chill everybody out over the whole austerity thing.

    revitalise the property industry (grow houses)

    And maybe, If we all smoke enough weed, government policy will start to make sense! ;-)
