Default Eamon Gilmore to Launch Book on James Connolly

GILMORE TO LAUNCH JAMES CONNOLLY BIOGRAPHY TOMORROW

Labour Leader Eamon Gilmore will launch

‘James Connolly – A Full Life’, by Donal Nevin

    Thursday 17th November at 6.00pm
Connolly Hall, Liberty Hall. (entrance at the Liberty Hall Theatre, Eden Quay, the quay side of the main building)
I'm just wondering what Connolly would say to Gilmore, if he was there.

It would probably be appropriate for a few socialists to go there and tell Gilmore what Connolly woud have said. I know if I was in Ireland I'd be there with bells on.
Do not rejoice in his defeat, you men. For though the world has stood up and stopped the bastard, the (female dog) that bore him is in heat again. Bertolt Brecht

This is in the same league as the Pope spreading the word of Christ.

How do you explain his sudden interest in the left?

Does the book tell how Connolly's policies destabilised Europe and got the Germans all miffed with consequences we all know about?

I don't think so: I think he would have done his best to bury him politically.

I think Connolly would have seen Gilmore as a traitor.

When European socialists divided and split, each supporting their own governments in the Great War (with Ireland supporting Britain), Connolly campaigned for German victory. British diplomatic expert Roger Casement saw European war coming - he predicted it in his book, blamed British policies for it, and, when war broke out, worked for a German victory. Connolly saw Germany as the most social-minded power, not just because of the Bismarckian welfare system but also because Germany continued to lead the field in social policies.

I believe Connolly and Casement were right - once the catastrophe was under way (the "Crime against Europe" as Casement called it), the least worse outcome was German-Austro-Hungarian victory. Allied victory produced the subsequent mayhem in Central Europe and the Middle East.

It would be interesting to know what Eamonn Gilmore thinks about this, the most important fact about Connolly.

Today Germany's systems of social partnership, industrial democracy, long term financing of its industries, and a vocational education system without parallel in the world, make that country the best (or least worse) chance of breaking the finance rackets of City of London and Wall Street. (Yes, a part of the traditionally conservative German banking system threw its massive weight into the rackets when CoL/WS managed to get financial globalisation/liberalisation implemented by the EU.)

Connolly is needed again to avert another catastrophe. But does Gilmore see that?
