There is far too much of it about, generally, in Europe. I guess only having a party with far right antecedents, Fine Gael, in the mainstream has kept Ireland from having more of the same.

Greece is running a couple of years ahead of other states, in terms of economic and social strains.

Well then Holly, this one is specially for you.

The German Interior Ministry has today launched a "Neo-Nazi" database, to be shared by some 30 different police departments throughout the country. This comes as a direct result of the "Kebab" murders where for a good few year different police departments had been shadowing a few neo-nazi without sharing information, resulting in the deaths of 9 immigrants and 1 policeman.
The database shares details on some 22,500 known neo-nazi, of which 9,800 are labeled "dangerous" and "violent". It shares all known details of these people amongst all the different police departments, including details on tattoo's etc.
There are also plans to use this database as a model for a European version, probably run and managed Europol. About time to...

This looks more like the rise of anti-fascism in Europe to me.

    Which is in response to.....!

The thread is acting as a good source to document the rise of the far right in general. Groups like the Golden Dawn are usually linked throughout Europe to other far right groups and as such this can provide a useful compendium for keeping track...

Nah! There is too much spin on this thread to be of any use.

    More spin...

This is bad news. Golden Dawn has set up offices in New York, Melbourne and Montreal and are targeting the Greek diaspora with their "politics". I wonder how they get away with this, or are there no hate-speech laws in the USA, Canada or Australia either?

Will they make an alliance with any other far right groups?

They will want to get back on their feet first. They got a slightly warmer welcome than expected...

Apparently, still nothing working for them

    Delighted

    Gotta love Anonymous

Meanwhile good article from FT about the rise of the far right...

    http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/667b08a6-0...#axzz27aR4kTkF

Some of the ways they raise their profile (I just skimmed it)

    Immigrant bashing
    Elite bashing
    Dropping the anti semetic rhetoric

They also tend to chase floating voters...

Golden Dawn is also trying to get a foot on the Ground in Canada. Any friends in Canada and surrounding areas? This is where you can sign up to stop it.

It worked in Australia. They were not allowed to open up and start spouting their poison. Aussie government agreed they were a racist and fascist organization and legally banned them. Kudos.

Last night saw some serious clashes between the fascist Golden Dawn and locals, immigrants and what could possibly be one of the "hit-squads" Venizelos mentioned the other day.
According to reports by local people at the scene, a bunch of GD supporters were busy smashing up the shop of a foreigner when they were confronted by some angry residents.
Then, a group of some 80 motor bikes appeared out of now where, and the drivers and passengers took on the fascists in a pitched battle which was more watched than broken up by the police who had also arrived on the scene and were apparently very reluctant to get involved in this.
Net result, 2 of the fascist are in hospital, so is one policeman (he probably didn't get out of the way fast enough), and 15 arrests were made.
The riot happened in Agios Panteleimon and spread to the Amerikis Square, both areas known as GD "strong holds.

I never liked Venizelos as he gave me an impression of being corrupt and not so straight forward guy that he was. I liked Tsparis guy as he is so refreshing honest of where he stands on and still do unlike of Venizelos who kept changing his goal posts.

After a shouting match in Parliament today, the GD delegation left the building, promising more "action". Ilias the boxer was in great form, shouting obscenities ate anybody who dared to disagree with the trash he was spouting about parliamentarians not having any right to sit in the Greek Parliament because they are "only 25% Greek", and even having a go at the Chief of Staff or the Greek army for insulting the army by speaking to civilians (the shipyard workers who invaded the MoD) WITHOUT wearing his full military uniform. (He wasn't wearing his hat!)

Reaction from Parliament? The speakers have been convened to look at ways to stop this carry on and the statement released afterwards could very well speel the beginning of hate-speech laws etc.
Democracy endures when it protects itself. The professional bullies who try to exploit the distress of large sections of Greek society must learn to respect democracy and parliamentarism. But this must be imposed on them through the institutions of the same parliamentary democracy.
Lets hope they finally get the message that these guys need to be stopped and stopped NOW.

These guys are getting out of hand, and something needs doing. Obviously, the current government isn't going to do anything, on the contrary, GD is taking the focus away from the goings on on political levels, and gives Samaras and co the space to push through the Troika dictat while GD runs riot on the Streets of AThens.

Last night they picketed a theatre where the Play "Corpus Christi" was to open. This play depicts Jesus and the 12 Apostles as a group of gay men in present day Texas. During the resulting riot, the police arrested a few people, and then the incredible happened. One of the GD "parliamentarians" present and rioting walked over to the police van holding those arrested, and helped one of them out of the van and walked away. The police stood and watched, but did nothing.

When asked about their non action, the police officer in charge answered that "all arrests are virtual". The journalist who filmed this pushed the issue, and was subsequently beaten to within an inch of his life. Manolis Vamvounis later tweeted his ordeal, and fears for his life. He has taken down his facebook profile and other public details, and is in hiding.

Meanwhile, the guy in the white shirt and bald head is one of the GD "parliamentarians" who was present yesterday and who is thought to have been involved in the beating of the journalist.

If you are sensiteve to faul language, please skip this bit

This is the translation of what this guy is shouting at the people acting in the play and entering the theatre:

“You little ****, wrap it up.
    Did you get that?
Wrap it up you little faggots.
You “sticking-it-in-the-ass”, *******, actors my ass.
Yes, just keep staring at me you little hooker.
    Your time is up.
    Film, go ahead film [me]
[Something I don’t understand ending] you are fucked by the Pakistanis.
    You ******* Albanian ********, eh, you ******* Albanian ********.”

Note that the police make not even the slightest attempt to shut this guy up, on the contrary.

It is blatantly obvious that our government is not going to do anything about these guys, and they are getting more brazen by the day. So, in cooperation with many journalist in Greece who have friends abroad, I will here and now ask all of you, posters, authors, moderators, parliamentarians and everybody else who visits this forum to help Greece help itself. Please get as many letters, petitions, complaints etc as you can to the Greek embassy in Dublin, demanding the Greek government act against these people now.
this is where you can find them:

Try and get this raised in your parliament and have the Irish government express its fear for Irish citizens in Greece. Get your trade unions to come out and condemn this. Greece does need your help.

This is a message that just came in from an Austrian lady, living in Greece, married to a Greek man.

"I am very irritated and feel threatened by this development myself, because I spend a lot of time in Greece with my husband."

A British lady echoes this also this afternoon:

"They had to be stopped, shame on them! I am a foreigner from an EU country, I am married to my Greek husband and we have 2 beautiful children. I don’t want them to grow up in fear in their own country – they have dual nationality- I am thinking to take to whole family abroad."

    And news just in
The granddaugher of General Christodoulos Tsigantes (1897-1970) was attacked by a group of five far-rightists who demanded to see her ID.

The incident, which took place on Stisichorou Street, in central Athens recently, was unearthed after the woman filed a complaint with the British Embassy.

According to the report, the woman, who holds dual nationality, was asked to prove her Greek nationality and speak Greek.

General Tsigantes led the Ieros Lochos Greek special forces unit which was formed in the Middle East in 1942.

Meanwhile, according to Skai, several embassies located in Athens have received complaints from their citizens that members of far-right Golden Dawn party have demanded to check their IDs.
