Today in history: 18 May 1897

Frank Capra was born on this date in Sicily and emigrated with his family to the USA at the age of 6.

Capra became one of America's most powerful directors during the 1930s. Among his leading films was It Happened One Night (1934), which became the first film to win all five top Oscars, including Best Picture. Other leading films included Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), Lost Horizon (1937), You Can't Take It With You (1938), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), Meet John Doe (1941), Arsenic and Old Lace (1944), and It's a Wonderful Life (1946)

Capra was also active within the film industry, engaging in various political and social issues. He served as President of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, worked alongside the Screenwriters Guild, and was head of the Directors Guild of America. He enlisted in the Army during World War I after graduating college, and again in World War II at the peak of his career, when he directed 11 documentary war films for the U.S. government's Why We Fight series, winning an Academy Award for one and a Distinguished Service Medal when the war ended.

The US has passed an important demographic milestone. The census reports that in the 12 months ending July 2011, for the first time the number of minority babies born exceeded the number of non Hispanic whites by 50.4 to 49.6%. This hastens the day when the country will be majority minority. Four states and Wash DC already have that distinction. The change has been driven almost exclusively by immigrants. US demographers often cite what they believe to be the superior US immigration and integration policies for helping the US maintain a competitive edge over Europe. They point to the fact that despite the events of 9-11 there has been no overt discrimination against the various Muslim communities, (Islam is the fastest growing religion). Muslims are not rioting in the streets like the North Africans in France, nor do they have the problems of integration like those seen in the UK and Germany, and there are no holding camps for those who have not committed a crime.

Given the Open Ireland Campaign, and the taxi driver situation a compare and contrast discussion on various US/EU/Irish policies might be worthwhile. My own view, and i suspect that of others is that Ireland measures up well in this category, but there’s always room for improvement.

Here’s a NYT and WaPo piece on the US situation.

-- NYT's Sabrina Tavernese: "Whites Account for Half of Births in U.S.": "After years of speculation, estimates and projections, the Census Bureau has made it official: White births are no longer a majority in the United States."
"Non-Hispanic whites accounted for 49.6 percent of all births in the 12-month period that ended last July, according to Census Bureau data made public on Thursday, while minorities - including Hispanics, blacks, Asians and those of mixed race - reached 50.4 percent, representing a majority for the first time in the country's history...."
"While over all, whites will remain a majority for some time, the fact that a younger generation is being born in which minorities are the majority has broad implications for the country's economy, its political life and its identity. "This is an important tipping point," said William H. Frey, the senior demographer at the Brookings Institution..." http://tinyurl.com /77ncz9a

The census has forecast that non-Hispanic whites will be outnumbered in the United States by 2042, and social scientists consider that current status among infants a harbinger of the change.
“This is a watershed moment,” said Andrew Cherlin, a sociologist at Johns Hopkins University who specializes in family issues. “It shows us how multicultural we’ve become.”
Although minorities make up about 37 percent of the U.S. population, the District and four states are majority minority — California, Hawaii, New Mexico and Texas.
Metropolitan Washington, where whites are in the minority, is far ahead of the curve. Among children younger than 5, there are more minorities than whites in virtually every jurisdiction except Arlington and Loudoun counties. Statewide, Virginia has just barely more white children under age 1 than minorities, but they are on the verge of falling below half.
One of the biggest factors in the demographic change is age. Whites are by far the oldest group. Their median age is over 42, so many are beyond their prime childbearing years. In contrast, the median age for Hispanics is under 28. Blacks and Asians have median ages in their early 30s.

In a further blow to the throw backs in government in Ireland. Obama has urged Euopre to seek growth and cut Merkel's austerity program to avert a Euopean meltdown and a global crisis.
This is a further blow to Merkel's European allies from her European People's Party at the EU namely Fine Gael.

I think at this stage rather than worrying about a second referendum Fine Gael should be calling a general election. They have proved that they do not have the expertise to lead a country with their county council mentality. According to The Guardian

Quote:

Barack Obama is to put pressure on Germany to ease the pain of austerity with policies to boost growth, as he uses two days of talks with the G8 industrial nations to warn Europe it needs to act swiftly to spare the world economy from a second deep recession in four years.

Ahead of the G8 summit, at Camp David this weekend, a warning from the ratings agency Fitch that Greece's days in the single currency could be numbered heightened fears in Washington that the worsening crisis in the eurozone poses a threat to America's fragile recovery and President Obama's re-election chances.

Obama will welcome the new French president, François Hollande, as a potential ally in his push for Europe to follow the US in giving a higher priority to expansionary policies, and as a counterweight to the German chancellor, Angela Merkel.

Obama can expect support from David Cameron, who told Merkel and Hollande on Thursday that eurozone leaders must embark on a series of urgent steps to prop up the single currency, to avoid a major implosion across the continent.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2012/may/17/barack-obama-eu-growth-crisis

Though this slap on the back for Hollande may come at the price of allowing French troops to train Afghans and French special forces to remain in country past his end of 2012 deadline to pull out French combat troops. It is a portent of the power of Hollande's rhetoric and stance in the face of German obstinacy.

However it leaves the two parties leading the Irish government in a quandary and a quagmire of their own making. They are almost alone advocating a ratification of the Austerity treaty alongside Frau Merkel. Other governments who follow Merkel are dropping like flies. Labour could pull the plug but they are too craven and have not achieved their 2 years in ministerial pension status yet.

It is now becoming clear that their cap in hand, tipping their forelocks approach has been politically and more importantly economically bad for Ireland and the people.

Let them seek a further mandate for their failed interpretations of the European and global situation by calling an immediate general election.

Some of this appears to mirror some, I emphasise some, of what is happening in Ireland. The workers formed co-ops and occupied factories so that they could reclaim their jobs (similar to Vita Cortex workers at the moment). Co-ops were formed for people to save their jobs . Everyone in the poorer parts of town clubbed together and ensured at least people had a lunch of sorts . There was a barter exchange then at least people could trade for clothes, food etc etc. Would something similar like this happen in Ireland is austerity measures come in ? Argentina proved that with people power that with one small collection of acts (they burned tyres on roadways to draw attention, formed community action groups etc) that became larger groups and grew that it was possible for people to fight against the government and improve the life of its citizens.

Frank Jinks told his daughter Sarah’s inquest, finally concluded after 13 years, that the €28,500 compensation he received added up to €2.50 a day – a sum he “would have no problem giving . . . to get my daughter back”. Their Sligo town council house, was fitted with inflammable wood covered in beautyboard. Mr Jinks, who suffered burns to his arm, back, face and hair trying to rescue his daughter, told coroner Dr Desmond Moran and the jury:

Terrible story really and shows how little some lives are valued in this Republic.

Building houses made of beautyboard! Not as far-fetched as you might think. I remember working on a IT project in the late-80s and early-90s and I had occasion to visits some houses in a council estate. Some of the houses were built in the late 60s and into the 70s. The fronts and backs of the houses were built with asbestos sheets, and the frames of the windows were made of white deal and the front and back doors were also made of white deal wood ... at the time I was on this project these sheets were being replaced with .... beautyboard!

Today in history: 17 May 1866

The French composer and pianist was born on this date in Hornfleur, Normandy.

In 1887, Satie left the Parisian home of his father and stepmother to take lodgings in Montmartre. By this time, he had started what was to be an enduring friendship with the romantic poet Patrice Contamine, and had had his first compositions published by his father. He soon integrated with the artistic clientele of the Le Chat Noir Café-cabaret, and started publishing his Gymnopédies. Publication of compositions in the same vein (Ogives, Gnossiennes, etc.) followed. In the same period he befriended Claude Debussy.

Politically, Satie was a socialist and joined a party early in the twentieth century. He also played a full part in the artistic life of Paris becoming associated with Ravel and young musicians as well as the Dada movement and surrealism.

After years of heavy drinking, Satie died on 1 July 1925 from cirrhosis of the liver, never having married.

Satie's best known music is his Gymnopédies but most people at some time will have heard his Gnossiennes Nº 1 which I am posting here. The pianist is Pascal Rogé and the monochrome photographs of Paris add to the atmosphere.
