In the space of eight days, three people have been killed while being "subdued" by British police.

I particularly like the one about the man who died after being tasered, while self-harming.

The following night Great Manchester Police officers were forced to use a Taser to subdue Philip Hulmes, a 53-year-old truck driver from Bolton, who had locked himself in his house. Mr Hulmes had reportedly begun stabbing himself in the stomach when police broke into his house; they stunned him because he was still violent, they said. He later died in hospital.

I can't understand how the Bobbies lost their skill in being able to give a proper wallop with an old fashioned truncheon.

Ah, simpler times Holly.
The old fashioned Bobbies didn't have to deal with the sophisticated crime of a man stabbing himself in the stomach.

The perception of tasers as non-lethal weapons may make them more dangerous than firearms.

Watching reality cop footage from the US, where it must be said there's a much higher tolerance of extreme violence by the state, the police seem to use them indiscriminately.

It often appears as if they're used, not to subdue dangerous persons, but to punish any failure to comply instantly with instructions.

The report doesn't say that he died as a result of the taser being used on him.

That, Baron, is a very good point.
I'll edit the OP accordingly.

Thanks.
