A little Russian boy aged 7 was put on a plane, alone, by his American adoptive parents to fly back to Russia as they didn't want him any more. They said his behaviour was threatening.

The IT reports today that Ireland has been added to the Russian blacklist for adoptions, because post-adoption reports have not been returned as required for up to 70 adoptions.

I know someone who adopted a Russian child and the adoption did not work out. To be brutally honest, the arrangement looked to me a bit like buying a puppy for Christmas. The adoptive family got no support and seemed surprised that the little girl who had been brought up in institutions seemed to them to have behaviour problems.

The IT says that the HSE is responsible for post-adoption monitoring but after great efforts, the family I know got no support.

Another issue with adoptions is that even if there is a lot of regulation over the initial adoption, the adoptive parents seem then to be able to "pass the child on" to another adoptive family without referring back to the original country.

I have sympathy for anyone who wants a child and can't have one, and I'm sure there are some successful adoptions, but rearing a child is difficult enough even without the issues of different cultural background, lack of extended family, different appearance, coping with a child that has had a very disrupted childhood etc. that adopted children have to deal with.

If we are going to do it at all, we should do it right, but if we want to help children in other countries, surely there are better ways of doing it ?
