Sky and others are reporting an oil leak from a deep sea Shell oil rig, off the east coast of Scotland.
Oh-oh.
The platform has been shut down and so far attempts to stop the leak have not worked. There seems to be no information on the size of the leak.

Could it happen in Mayo in the near future given the fact that their safety record is questionable?

Shell have a substantial spill in teh North Sea
The flow of oil from the worst spill in UK waters in the past decade, at one of Shell's North Sea platforms, has been "greatly reduced" but not yet stopped completely, the government said on Monday.
Conservationists warned that the leak could harm bird life in the area, at a delicate time in their development, as the oil company worked to minimise the damage.
Stuart Housden, director of RSPB Scotland, said: "We know oil of any amount, if in the wrong place, at the wrong time, can have a devastating impact on marine life. Currently thousands of young auks – razorbills, puffins and guillemots – are flightless and dispersing widely in the North Sea during late summer. So they could be at serious risk if contaminated by this spill."
Green campaigners said the incident raised questions over the safety of oil companies' plans to drill in deep water in the Arctic, as the North Sea is generally supposed to be the safest in the world in terms of spills. Ben Ayliffe of Greenpeace, which has been campaigning to stop further oil-drilling exploration in delicate environments such as the Arctic, said: "The North Sea is supposed to be ultra-safe – we are told spills can't happen there. Shell is looking to move into the Arctic where an oil spill would all but impossible to clean up. Events in the North Sea should give the company pause for thought."

A second oil leak (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2011/aug/16/shell-second-oil-leak) has been discovered from an offshore platform in the North Sea.

Elsewhere, the Norwegians got lucky. They've just discovered a 40 billion dollar offshore oilfield.

More on the second leak and the poor level of information supplied by Shell.

And they will use the Norwegian oil company to exploit and profit from the find.
They are lucky not to have corrupt politicians selling all their oil rights for a few brown envelopes

I think said Norwegian company is no stranger to this practice. Aren't they a partner in the Corrib gas project? Unless, of course, they got this lovely chunk for free. ;)

the other one, in the Gulf, might be too
No, this isn’t a post from last year. Oil from the Macondo Well site is fouling the Gulf anew – and BP is scrambling to contain both the crude and the PR nightmare that waits in the wings. Reliable sources tell us that BP has hired 40 boats from Venice to Grand Isle to lay boom around the Deepwater Horizon site – located just 50 miles off the Louisiana coast. The fleet rushed to the scene late last week and worked through the weekend to contain what was becoming a massive slick at the site of the Macondo wellhead, which was officially “killed” back in September 2010.
The truly frightening part of this development, as reported in a previous post (see below), is the oil may be coming from cracks and fissures in the seafloor caused by the work BP did during its failed attempts to cap the runaway Macondo Well – and that type of leakage can’t be stopped, ever.
