This video is a music video of an outdoor ceremony held near the US Embassy, Grosvenor Square, London, on 4th July, US Independence Day, in 2011, the centenary of the birth of the 40th President of the USA, Ronald Reagan to unveil a new statue of Ronald Reagan there.

Condoleezza Rice, the Former US Secretary of State, is there representing Nancy Reagan, the former US First Lady and wife of President Ronald Reagan.

Condi thanks the people of Great Britain for the honour bestowed upon Ronald Reagan and upon the American people of establishing this statue of Ronald Reagan, describing the special relationship as an unshakable faith in our values across an ocean and across time, our courage to act on those values, to save one another from trouble and to project those values and hopes for those who still toil in tyranny, understanding the irrepressible human spirit which triumphs because the desire for freedom is universal.

The statue represents Ronald Reagan's partnership with another great patriot Lady Thatcher, Prime Minister of Great Britain.

The world we see today, a Europe whole, free and at peace, a Europe in which we enjoy friendship and alliance with the former captive states in the transatlantic alliance called "NATO" seemed impossible in the dark days of World War 2 and in the days when the shadow of Soviet communism covered half a continent and even in the beginning of 1989. Incredibly, the Berlin wall came down, Europe was liberated, and hammer and sickle would came down from the Kremlin for the last time.

This gives us hope and optimism and will to stand this those who are still trapped in tyranny, to stand with those who profess faith in our values.

The statue is a commemoration of a glorious past and a call to an even more glorious future.

The video includes images which recall Condoleezza Rice's role in ending the cold war and the liberations of Kuwait, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya.

The music is "Rule Britannia" and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic".

1989: Condoleezza Rice ends the cold war.

Well, there was a supertanker named after her...

Chevron, for unspecified reasons, honored Rice by naming an oil tanker Condoleezza Rice after her, but controversy led to its being renamed Altair Voyager.

Peter, I was in fact not being serious . . . she was at Wimbledon but that was incidental. One of the BBC commentators thought it was Michelle Obama - but then I am sure there are political commentators who would not know one tennis star from another of the same ethnic origin and gender. :)

There is a more serious issue about Condi. She and Dubya were keen that Turkey should be in the EU - and Barack and Hillary are taking the same line.

A better idea. Let's have Turkey occupy the southern third of Pennsylvania - we'll have to pretend it has been going on since 1974 - and then let the US give a green card to every Turkish citizen who reaches their country. And let their government butt out of the question of who should be admitted to membership of the EU which is not for them to say!

Don Regan telling Ronald Reagan to speed it up reminds me of the Pope's aide trying to speed him up when he was shaking hands with Condoleezza Rice. Well you can't blame the Pope - probably the one time he will meet the true saviour in this life or the next! ;)

No danger of offending anyone with my Condi-for-saviour video, right? :D

I'd say the only way Condi could have ended the Cold War was by starting Global Warming.

This video is selected excerpts from a German drama-documentary on the reunification of Germany around the time of the ending of the cold war.

It features Condoleezza Rice because at the time she was President George Herbert Walker Bush's top Soviet specialist and advisor present at all big meetings with Gorbachev.

So Condi's role in ending the cold war was central. Sure Presidents Reagan and Bush played a key part too. Reagan's VP was Bush and Bush appointed Condi and took her advice mostly - but it was Condi in key meetings who coaxed Soviet generals and some of the Communist hard-liners out of their bunker mentality to give Gorbachev the support and some of the time he need to make big compromises like removing Soviet troops from East Germany.

Some of those key meetings were re-enacted in this docu-drama. You can see the actress playing Condi even if you can't follow the dialogue because like mine, your German is not up to much. :o

Peter, with respect, I watched the first two minutes of the video and found it unpersuasive.

I recognize what I’m about to say refers to a different time period than you are referencing. In Washington, Condi is mostly considered a failure as Secretary of State, largely because she got bullied on policy issues by those two “princes among men” Dick Cheney, and Donny Rummy.

The reasoning would go, if she was ineffective when she had power, why would you suspect she was effective when she didn’t have it. She’s a brilliant scholar of the USSR, her specialty, and pianist, (played with Yoyo Ma), and accomplished in many other ways, but I think that does not elevate her to the pedestal you seem to seek to put her on.

By devoting so much of her energy to right-wing Republicanism, Condoleezza Rice let down her race.
The people of Alabama did not feel let down by Condi.

Alabama's Condi (YouTube) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKNtkCfPGWY)

Also Condi is not on the right of the American Republican party. She was confirmed as US Secretary of State by the US Senate with many Democratic Senators voting for her.

Also when the American Republican party becomes so right-wing that it changes its spots from republicanism to royalism, monarchism such as when President Bush invited the Queen to the White House, it is right-wing certainly, but not "republicanism" as such, quite the reverse.

Neither it is "republicanism" when the Irish President invited Queen Elizabeth to the republic of Ireland recently.

So the pro-monarchist stance of US presidents (and perhaps from now Irish Presidents?) whilist certainly extreme right wing politics is not "republicanism".

Such big policy issues as the US government's diplomatic stance towards the UK royal family is a policy set by the US president, not by even his most senior officials such as Secretary of State.

Apart from the honourable exception of President Lyndon Bains Johnson, all recent US Presidents have met and supported Queen Elizabeth, President Obama included.

Yes when US Presidents support monarchy it is letting the human race down very badly, especially so when the Saudi monarchy is allowing the Saudi kingdom to fund their secret agent terrorists such as Al Qaeda to wage terrorist war against the Western democracies.

President Bush held hands with the Saudi King and President Obama bowed to him - yes that is letting us all down - not just "black" people but the entire human race.

I do question Condi's diplomatic stance on monarchy, understanding that as Secretary of State she had no option but to follow President Bush's lead on this

British TV reports South Park re: Queen vs The Republic (YouTube) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ririN1h-WAc)

I do ask if Condi would let us all down in that pro-royal way if she became president? I trust that would she would not.

The meaning of Condoleezza Rice - named! (YouTube) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMKhrg3CSpc)

We should all ask that question of any political leader we might support.

However, it is quite misplaced to blame this aspect of global stupid right-wing pro-royal politics on Condi. We should all stop sucking up to the Queen and royal family and start thinking of somewhere to exile them to.

I heard she plays a mean piano.
She does play piano well but "mean" is not a word I associate with Condi, except in this video by someone else.

Mean Girls - Condi vs Hilary (YouTube) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBpsmKhUFJk)

Condi is tough when she needs to be but she is tough for generous and compassionate reasons - to protect innocents - never for selfish reasons.

See - Paxman interview video I posted earlier.

Condi is a very generous person - politically, when the US aid budget tripled under President Bush, quadrupled to Africa under her direction.

Condi is also very generous personally with her free time she gives for the less fortunate in society.

I did make one Condi music video which I set to a Beethoven sonata, the Pathetique, but it is not Condi playing.

Which the German docu-drama? Could it be you are one tough Count to persuade in German?

Nonsense. Watch the Paxman interview I posted earlier for how Condi got the upper hand over them eventually and saved the situation in Iraq.

Also Condi can hit back at Rummy and has done so recently no problem.

Condoleezza Rice on Libya, Afghanistan & US military: praises Gates, dismisses Rumsfeld (YouTube) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9A03nr6zDII)

The reasoning would go, if she was ineffective when she had power, why would you suspect she was effective when she didn’t have it.
Well she was effective in terms of her area of power as Secretary of State. Diplomacy was excellent under her but certain matters are not solvable by diplomatic means.

The Saudi monarchy and fellow monarchs are not fighting us using secret agent terrorists like Al Qaeda because our diplomacy is inadequate but to impose their fundamentalist vision of the world upon us all. Diplomacy can't crack that one. It needs something like the Arab Spring but 10 times as much by the US / NATO military taking over or out all Arab monarch- and military dictator- run TV satellites they use to prop their own regimes up and to stoke war against us.

So I am talking about Arabsat and Nilesat. No Secretary of State can knock these out. Only the US military can do that and to date the US as a matter of national policy has refused directly to confront those regimes - indeed the US funds Egypt to a tune of nearly $2 billion a year and is most eager to sell the Saudis weapons.

I am not claiming that the UK or Europe has its act together either - after all Nilesat was built, launched and is probably serviced by the European space and satellite industries and Nilesat is broadcasting Libyan state - Gaddafi - TV at the same time NATO is trying to bomb Gaddafi!

So the military strategic leadership of the US, NATO, the UK, France etc is and always has been a mess - but that has little to do with failures of diplomacy. This is a failure of Rumsfeld and Gates, not Rice.

You can't really reason too much with Arab kings and North African / Arab / Pakistani military elites who want to keep power and who are waging a proxy war to keep and grow their power. Only confronting them - by actions such as taking out Bin Laden (done) or seizing their satellites (not done) can solve that problem.

The US might think about not funding the Pakistani and Egyptian military as well to "fight terrorism" because if you do those military elites will decide to create terrorism covertly so as to point to it as evidence for the "need" for more US funding to "fight terrorism."

A country's military can't fight a war like a fool and expect diplomats to win the war that the military is losing.

However good a Secretary of State is he or she cannot make the US military better strategic fighters. However, whatever diplomacy could achieve - Condi got the job done but don't expect the impossible. The US State Department does not have an army to command.

Condi was only National security advisor during Bush's first term of office. It is not a formal office of state, just an advisor. The NSA does not command the US military, the president does, via the Defense Secretary.

She’s a brilliant scholar of the USSR, her specialty, and pianist, (played with Yoyo Ma), and accomplished in many other ways, but I think that does not elevate her to the pedestal you seem to seek to put her on.
Yes well if the Cold War had got out of hand, 9/11 would have looked like peace in our time. Condi solved the cold war diplomatically because some of the leading Soviets like Gorbachev were reasonable people with rational goals, they did not want to impose a dark age on the planet unlike the enemy in the war on terror does or claims it does to keep US funding flowing to the Pakistani and Egyptian military.

There is no pedestal too high for Condoleezza Rice.
