South African white supremacist leader Eugene Terreblanche has been murdered, local media reports say.

Mr Terreblanche, 69, was beaten to death on his farm in the north-west of the country, the reports said. Two people are said to have been arrested.

Mr Terreblanche, who campaigned for a separate white homeland, came to prominence in the early 1980s.

He became the champion of a tiny minority determined to stop the process that was bringing apartheid to an end.

"Mr Terreblanche's body was found on the bed with facial and head injuries," AFP news agency quoted a police spokesman as saying.

The report said he had been killed after an alleged dispute with two workers over unpaid wages. The two have been charged with his murder.

The murder comes amid growing anxiety about crime in South Africa and what opposition politicians say are irresponsible and racially inflammatory sentiments from a minority of the ruling ANC party, says the BBC's Karen Allen in Johannesburg.

You remember snippets of the past as you move on in life. And I remember this fella Terreblanche alright from the telly and it being South Africa in the 80s and all of that kind of thing

Too young to remember him in the 80s - his views are repulsive, though.

However, things are becoming increasingly volatile in South Africa. I have been out there quite a number of times as I have family out there.... white, wealth south africans it should be said... but yea, they're very concerned for the future of the country. The security is unbelievable... the disparity between rich and poor, equally unbelievable. Another Zimbabwe waiting to happen.

Is this confirmed? He was a nasty piece of work, a supremacist bigot to his bones. Obviously murder is outrageous, even for racist vermin, and is to be condemned. I doubt I'll lose sleep though...

They say on the BBC it was a dispute over wages with two (now arrested) workers, but it also says that this might be used by some of his ilk as supposed confirmation of their fears of black majority rule. I don't see how that follows. Anyway, horrible way for anyone to go.

The very name of South African paramilitary leader Eugene Terreblanche highlighted the white supremacist's roots. Terreblanche means "white earth" in French, the language of the politician's Huguenot ancestors. His murder - reportedly being hacked to death with a panga on his farm - brings a gory end to a singularly ineffectual political career.

Terreblanche's thunderous voice and magnificent style of delivery - alternating between roar and husky whisper, with gestures to match - helped to disguise the complete meaninglessness of what he was saying. His oratory would sweep from the plight of white farmers, to ancient Greek philosophy, to the state of the Soviet Union, without any apparent logic.

While Julius Malema sings: "Kill the boer" Is that not a threat to all white South Africans? Anyone who think they know what it is like as a White South African living in South Africa, please come and live on our farms, and FEEL the hate towards you, and sleep evey night in fear. Its been a big shift in power. Maybe something similar to what happened to Protestant landowners here. In Ireland the Land Commission redistributed land over a long period of time. Perhaps that helped to take some of the steam out of it.

There was an item on violent crime in South Africa on France 24 this morning, in connection with the World Cup.

It wasn't a happy site to see both black and white communities under terrible stress from crime that wasn't being addressed by the police force.

There are a few areas in Ireland where people live under similar fear.

Vigilanteism and personal security can't be the answer. There must be economic, social and policing responses.
