The first review of Ireland's compliance with IMF/EU loan terms has been completed. The Mission Chief has proposed that Ireland should stop payments to long term unemployed people.

Michael Noonan is proposing a mini budget that will include a jobs creation package, but which will accept "other measures" to offset its cost.

The idea of doing this is to force reluctant people back to work, but as we know from the boom, when jobs were there, people worked.

This measure, which applies in many parts of the world, would lead to higher emigration and increased poverty and homelessness, pushing people into a soup kitchen existence.

If we're not careful, we could be well on course to become a truely horrible society.

The State could employ people and give them the equivalent of the dole (at the minimum wage) for doing community work

Problem solved.

The state is trying to shed employees.
There is some merit in the suggestion, but like most ideas with merit, it's likely to remain just an idea.

Providing that they ensure that everyone has some sort of assistance, I'm happy. But some of the long term unemployed might have to be placed on disability etc.

Da is unemployed 3 years now. Im betting when he finishes his enforced 'course/work experience' which was unpaid and actually cost him 400 euros he didnt have to register for it(the council never refunded like they're meant to as they're broke and couldnt be arsed) he will be told like o cuiv wanted, do community work or we take your dole. considering half our village is outta work and there aint no park to clean or anything here that wouldnt be a smart move. I honestly think he should take the younger kids and leave. They would be much better off in canada or somewhere like that and da never bought an overpriced house, luckily and i say luckily because i wont patronisingly imply others were stupid by saying he was 'prudent'. People must surely be leaving to escape mediocrity and the insanity of all this as well as the poverty. I mean what right minded person wants to pay tax to the bonfire policies of the troika that this vichy state govt is very happy to enforce? I mean again Ill say, spending 31k on me to go to college is just pointless if this is what awaits us-a miserable dole we have to slave for. It would be kinder if they just gave us food stamps.

Thats all well and good for early school leavers but it wont stop graduates leaving or help impoverished families, unless there was a higher minimum wage that is actually possible to live on or a small dole payment to make up for the difference..
