Glenn Close plays the part very well and makes it her own.

This clip featuring Guy Pierce was cut from the movie, but indicates the film's depth and subject matter, enjoy.

Saw it on Saturday musashi and can say I was very impressed. The cinematography was beautiful with the shots of outer space magnificent. Fassbender was so cold as the android David and the plot while a little confusing a little more thinking will reveal our origins. Cant say anything more as I might spoil the plot but if people get a chance to see it, please do. Spectacular stuff!

The director's cut will be a doozie.
My take is that it's a variation on the Promethean legend. Prometheus was a titan/giant/demi-god who was punished for eternity for playing god (giving us fire).
In the film 'fire' is represented by the alien 'weapon'.
There are numerous semiotic totems throughout the film that signpost this and indicate that if you play with fire, man or god, you're opening a pandoro's box and you're gonna get burned.
The scene at the end blew me away. It was quite a brash thing for the director to do which essentially reclaims the Alien mythos from directors like Cameron and Jeunet.

Saw it last night. Definite culminating message in the movie about preserving the status quo at all costs. Also I felt the ambiguous persona of The Batman from some previous incarnations was undermined. Good action flick though, although maybe a bit long as you say.

What a load of cr@ppy propaganda. The only known case of a minor being executed for desertion in the Great War was Herbert Burden, a British teenager who was "shot at dawn" at the age of 17. In fact the British (who were particularly fond of putting Irish soldiers in front of a firing squad - to create an example and to "encourage|" the others) have executed seven times as many soldiers for desertion and/or cowardice as the Germans.

Never thought about that.
Reincarnation is a theme in the novel but I missed it the first time. Mitchell uses motifs such as birthmarks shaped like comets that seem reminiscent of such mythical tropes.
In his other novels he lingers on amorphous smoke signals, random movements of elemental forces; it generates an ambiance of transience, impermanence.

Ben Affleck is not reknown for his political savy in films but this one is being tipped by critics to do well at the Oscars next year. Im heading to see it tommorrow night so will report back (if I rememer).
Synopsis from IMDB
In 1979, the American embassy in Iran was invaded by Iranian revolutionaries and several Americans are taken hostage. However, six manage to escape to the official residence of the Canadian Ambassador and the CIA is eventually ordered to get them out of the country. With few options, exfiltration expert Tony Mendez devises a daring plan: to create a phony Canadian film project looking to shoot in Iran and smuggle the Americans out as its production crew. With the help of some trusted Hollywood contacts, Mendez creates the ruse and proceeds to Iran as its associate producer. However, time is running out with the Iranian security forces closing in on the truth while both his charges and the White House have grave doubts about the operation themselves.

Argo is a great film, that is the truth . The story its based upon was declassified in 1997 by Bill Clinton and the yarn spins along at great pace. Its also pure propoganda however, look at how great America is, look at how we deceived the Iranians and what clever people we are. As a stand alone story its good, Affleck does it justice and surprisingly using cliches he can act (proving himself with all this alpha male boll!x) . Its going to win an Oscar for director I reckon, shame Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad didnt get a bigger role. 7/10

Oscar buzz has started. The piece below has a spreadsheet showing who or what has won which, so far.
Update: Zero Dark Thirty also won over Washington D.C.-area critics Monday when it took home the top prize, along with awards for best director and best actress. Our Golden Tally (below) has been updated to reflect that.
Original Post: Three film critics' groups announced their winners Sunday, and while Zero Dark Thirty continued its early award-season run, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association spread the love to The Master and Amour. Kathryn Bigelow and her Osama bin Laden flick claimed best picture and best director from both the Boston Society of Film Critics and the New York Film Critics Online, both of which also handed their top acting prizes to Emmanuelle Riva for Amour and Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln. It was Amour that scored big with the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's best picture award, though it actually put Riva in a tie with Silver Linings Playbook's Jennifer Lawrence for best actress. More surprisingly, perhaps, was Los Angeles honoring The Master with three prizes — for director Paul Thomas Anderson, actor Joaquin Phoenix, and supporting actress Amy Adams.

Just back from the Django Unchained, the new Tarantino movie about slavery (dressed up as a western). It's nearly three hours long but held my attention. I felt kinda weak leaving the cinema, however, as though I been shot half a dozen times myself. So if you have a limited capacity for violence it is probably best avoided.
Well filmed with a decent screenplay and excellent acting. Samuel Jackson in particular is very good. Also the German guy who plays a very interesting character. There is a quality soundtrack. The movie, something of a rough resetting of a German folktale (which is told in the movie), has many clever aspects. There is, for example, a very funny scene which is clearly a spoof of "Blazing Saddles" which itself was a spoof of westerns. So a spoof of a spoof. Also lots of philosophical/ethical questions posed around the protagonists (bounty hunters). The German character hates slavery and racism, for example, but likens it to his own profession (trading in human flesh as he puts it). So character contradictions to be teased out. Perhaps his unfortunate demise is some sort of act of personal redemption?
I've never really been a Tarantino fan but I'd recommend this though it has probably put race relations in the USA back a century. But that's the history and Tarantino pulls no punches in depicting it though there has been criticism, by Spike Lee for example, that it disrespects the Black experience in the USA. I'd have to hear his whole case on that but on the face of it I don't get it.

wow that critic was reaching, big time:
As I watched the long line of Blacks que up for the movie, and as I listened to their guffaws in the darkened theater, I realized that nobody likes a “nigger joke” more than Black people themselves. Are Black people themselves deeply masochistic? Would a Jewish American audience tolerate a film that makes fun of their history and their holocaust? I doubt it. Would the Weinstein have made a film about the Jewish Holocaust that ridicule and belittled the Jewish experience during Hitler? I doubt it.
Much of the problem has to do with Black people themselves. You would think that Samuel Jackson would have enough clout to produce his own films. Every Hollywood black have their own “company,” but they never produce any films.
Even though we have rich black men, they do not have the intellectual heft to confront Hollywood, which is supported by a culture of literacy. After four hundred years of being told that you can’t write, blacks tend to stay with “acting” and sports. They do not have the respect of their own authors to use their work in films. The literary codes that Hollywood uses depend on a culture that reads books, but for Blacks, literature is not a high priority.

wow that critic was reaching, big time:
Indeed.
The main serious political criticism of the movie seems to be that it deals with the issue of slavery in a spaghetti western genre in which everything is blown up and cartoon (and there are jokes and laughs) and that this is disrespectful.
I think that this is an argument worthy of consideration though I do not agree with it. The main issue seems to me to be whether the movie gives the impression of slavery being a good thing or a bad thing. There is no doubt about where this movie stands.
A secondary criticism being made is that Tarantino is upholding a view that Blacks were by nature submissive and they point to a whole scene in the movie where the plantation owner cuts a skull open and articulates a phrenological view. It is difficult to support this criticism where the entire (bloody) conclusion of the movie is a black man taking violent revenge. And the phrenology, of course, is entirely absurd.
Finally, there has been a great deal made of the use of the "n" word (114 times in the movie apparently). But to my mind this is just historically accurate. There was no other way that whites described blacks in the southern US in that period.

Really nice review Sam. Thanks.

I'm a fan of Tolkien, even though his books, characters etc are very elitist with all the crap about great kings being needed to rule the idle and useless rabble. Not very socialist! :D
People seem to be going into the Hobbit expecting more LOTR, but they forget that the Hobbit was a children's book, much more fun, and lighthearted than its sequel. So is the film.
I loved it, and am probably going to go see it again, something I never do.

I wish I could 'borrow you' for a day...you could take my children for a 3rd helping of this Globlin stuff... honestly i didnt know what to do with myself and its not like i could tune out or anything..... in my book it amounted to 'torture of my soul, hearing and sight'.

Tarantino used up all of his Pulp Fiction credit with that crass piece of jewish torture porn Inglorious Basterds, if he blows it with this one he's off the xmas card list.
I'm pipping Lincoln and Argo for oscars. Both are forgettable but their subject matter bigs up the US.

Interesting reviews, that would lure me in to watch the Tarantino movie, in spite of the retch factor.
For Christmas I got two box sets of Fassbinder (16 films) and one of Herzog (6). If I watch all of them (over 100 hours) I reckon my spoken German will be perfect, but I will be in a terminal gloom.
Dilemma.....

Among the RWF collection, is Effi Briest there? And the Marriage of Maria Braun (absolutely brilliant!)? When I lived in Berlin in the 90s, I got to meet Hanna Schygulla in the Bar Jeder Vernunft. Fabulous woman and a great actress.

Hanna Schygulla's work with RWF was always top drawer. But to see her at her best, The Marriage of Maria Braun is the film to see. She was compelling in that film. Alas, in the English-speaking world, she is hardly known. Which is, in my opinion, a huge pity.
Schygulla occasionally pops into the Bar Jeder Vernunft in Berlin, which is one of the best cabaret venues in Europe. My time in Berlin was greatly enhanced by visits to this venue where I saw everything from Balkan Express to Ute Lemper.
But meeting Hanna Schygulla remains the highlight. :D

Yes, a brilliant work by Stefan Aust. Even though the subject matter is somewhat hackneyed now, it is still an interesting insight into West German society in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Astrid Proll is still with us, even if Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof are not, but she doesn't really want to discuss it and rejects all approaches for an interview.
The film itself is great if you like that sort of thing.

Probably the best German film of recent times is "The Lives of Others" with the late, great Ulrich Mühe in the lead role. Absolutely fantastic film with Mühe giving a fabulous performance as the Stasi officer.
Sadly, Mühe passed away shortly afterwards with, I believe, stomach cancer. The bitter irony of Mühe performing the role of a Stasi officer so well lay in the fact that his second wife spied on him during their marriage for years on behalf of the Stasi.
His is a huge loss to German cinema.

Django Unchained was a superb film. Tarantino , with his penchance for violence again delivers a film with a lot of valid points. Man as a commodity lead to slavery which formed one of the main flash points for the American civil war. The black population was whipped into submission by the white man. Aside from being a historical commentary, Jamie Foxx plays the role well . Why the insufferable Leo Di Caprio had to get a role is beyond me, he has all the talent of tinned tomatoes.
Saw Les Mis last night. Anne Hathaway stole the show but whoever decided to give Russell Crowe a starring role needs their head examined.

THE FIRST AND TRUE RETELLING OF ‘ARGO.’ With Ben Affleck’s Argo a leading contender to win best picture at Sunday’s Academy Awards, The New Yorker revisits the first—and more truthful—retelling of the Hollywood-meets-hostage-crisis thriller. In 2007, Wired was the first outlet to publish the full account of how the CIA snuck six escaped hostages onto a commercial flight and out of Iran during the 1979 hostage crisis. “It was getting later and brighter,” Joshua Bearman wrote about the escape. “The airport was filling with people. Yep.
That number is not even close to the minimum estimate as to how many end-users are accessing the show. If one was to collate all of the torrent sites' (piratebay, torrentfreak, bitTorrent, demonoid etc) downloads AND add it to the number of 'live-stream' instances (tv-links.eu, sockshare, putlocker etc) you might have a more accurate estimate as to GoT's unofficial viewership. Add these to the official Nielsen net ratings numbers (4.1 million in the US) for HBO viewers... well basically the numbers are crazy-off-the-scale-big.
On a side note I don't believe the word 'nerd' need necessarily be applied as it implies a specialized minority whereas those unprecedented ratings numbers indicate knowledge on how to access the series and circumvent studio-oriented restrictions is commonplace.
And a footnote, the use of the phrase 'cord-cutters' is particularly well placed as it signals that a very large customer demographic is transcending traditional forms of media access and restriction. The phrase also hints at the nascent rebirth of the viewship's habits.

Netflix has 30 million U.S. subscribers, a bit more than HBO and about 9 million more than the nation’s biggest cable company, Comcast. Hastings audaciously projected Netflix’s audience to grow to as many as 90 million as it expands globally. Its revenue, which exceeded $1 billion for the first three months of 2013, was a record. Minutes after the figures were announced Monday, Netflix stock soared more than 23 percent.

Netflix (http://netflix.com) released a new 11-page document that outlines the company’s long-term outlook on the future of television — and more importantly, who will come out as winners. The outlook document comes after the company’s successful 2013 first quarter earnings report (http://venturebeat.com/2013/04/23/how-netflix-plans-to-make-more-money-without-raising-the-price-on-its-8-plans/), which saw Netflix bring in over $1 billion in revenue and a record 33 million subscribers. On French cinema, people should youtube any of the 1930s films by Jean Renoir such as la regle du jeu and la grande illusion(Franco-German). Best films I have seen in any language. Another one is Le grand voyage, also on youtube with subtitles as half the film is in Arabic. One German film I really enjoyed was Hunde: Wollt Ihr ewig leben?'(Dogs do you want to live forever). I still need subtitles to watch most German films but cannot find die Welle online with English subtitles, which is one I'd really like to see. Das Boot is also very good if you have a few days. Even if your French or German is not great, you should really watch some of these films as they are real works of art as opposed to the ***** in your local cinema
Incredible to think how few Irish films are produced.
