Has it already begun?

I read on a Socialist website a while back, an observation from outside Ireland, on the amount of coverage the United Left Alliance was able to take advantage of in the run up to the election was simply in order to give the equasion of the austerity being inflicted a balance with the people somehow seeing an alternative to the consensus domestically & within the EU leadership.

The observation went on to say that it predicted once the election was done & dusted that the plug would be pulled on how much air time the United Left Alliance would get.

Yesterday we seen one of the most impassioned from the heart speeches joe higgins has ever given & also Richard Boyd Barret making a powerful first speech to the entire nation.

Did you see or hear it on any of the media outlets after the live coverage?
Not on 6-1 news, TV3 news, Nuacht, Newstalk, etc etc.

The blackout i fear has begun to try & quell the progress of the United Left Alliance & what is more alarming is that the voice of Thousands of Irish men & women from their constituencies is being gagged.

I have the live session recorded & will circulate Joe & Richards speeches in the next few days.

Thanks, I will be watching the news as it unfolds over the weekend.

At least he was seen live on TV as he made the speech.

No hassle, I'm more concerned about FF being treated as anything other then an irrelevance at minute.

And massive Enda related sycophancy we have to endure till after the LateLate show at least.

Now i know i'll be shot down for slaying enda as it is obvious where my politics fall but, endas speech!!!!

I mean come on now really, what a pile of contrived prescripted waffle.
Does that kind of nonsense really get swallowed any more,

'The hibernian nights in the west.......let us turn to face the sun.......let us hang out our brightest colours'

If i was in any way religious i would say, 'God help us'!!!

Joe Higgins, Richard Boyd Barret, Luke Flanagan, Seamus Healy, Pearse doherty, & Mick wallace all nailed it with the truth of where we are yet as you pointed out the bullshít waffle of Martin about endas wifes time as press officer for FF got more coverage than any of the above.

This governement will be despised within 6 months of being in office aside from the continuation of the FF program for being more of the same old Mé Feinners in it for themselves.

Election coverage by RTE is governed by law/regulation which requires "balance" so coverage of the ULA was compulsory. I am not sure what their guidelines are for between elections and it would be worth finding out.

I predicted yesterday on the Oireachtas thread that none of that would reach the 6 o'clock news.

It is quite normal for RTE to only cover the speeches of the main party leaders in Daíl debates.

Not only does the media ignore later speeches from TDs, but so do other TDs who pile out into the Daíl bar, leaving the likes of Higgins to speak to a handful of people in a near empty Daíl chamber.

There are three things I can think of that can be done about this

One is to pester RTE and other media about failure to cover all political groupings.

The second is to promote awareness and use of the Dail streaming link. We have been doing that for the last year and using twitter and facebook to share the link.

The third is to use youtube and independent media as much as possible. The way that Pearse Doherty's senate speech on NAMA was circulated was classic - it was shared via Facebook, forums and other social media as well as on the SF website.

Someone said to me that Enda Kenny's speech reminded them of Thatcher's election victory speech also full of platitudes about unity and the furure. Not far wrong.

Thanks for all that but Joe Higgins spoke after Martin & Before Gerry Adams, Pearse Doherty, Richard Boyd barrett, Mick Wallace, Luke flanagan to a full house & delivered the cold hard truth.

What did surprise me though was no one bar the seconder for kenny spoke from labour!

Enda used the face the sun lark in his closing bit on the PT debate too as it goes.
Dev was president when he was elected, so I'm sure he has had enough moments in front of the mirror to come up with something.

Okay, already it begins. We pay for RTE, yet we have absolutely no say in what it does. It is a FF ridden station, and that has not changed, nor will it, because people don't get sacked from RTE because they are never employed in the first place. They are "placed" there. It's a bloody disgrace and I am sick and tired of it.

Joe Higgins speech was brilliant. But I only saw it repeated on the VB show on TV3. And then of course even when the Dáil was in session yesterday Mammy O'Rourke, co-owner of RTE it seems, was there as always. She's like one of those bloody adverts that always seem to come on as soon as you switch the box on. She is always on somewhere on RTE.

RTE has to be sorted out. It's a bloody family affair at this stage. Outrageous.

Now, regarding the empty Dáil Chambers when backbenchers are speaking, this is the norm. It does not mean that no one is listening. Every office has a Monitor giving a live feed of the goings-on and T.D.s at this stage will be scurrying around trying to "liberate" things they need, and there is also the availability of asking for a specific speech or whatever to be sent to your T.V. monitor at a later date. By this time, I left in 2002, they could even have bloody holograms appearing now for all I know. But it is very disheartening for the new lads. Joe would have expected it, but my heart bleeds for the younger fellas who may very well be making their Maiden speech.

Huge Reform is badly needed.

I was listening to Newstalk's live broadcast of proceedings in work yesterday.
As soon as Joe H. began to speak, the live feed to the Dail ended.
It was as disgraceful as it was blatant.

I'm also going to add this to the Newstalk thread.

Buddha and Griska,
agree entirely...and have to say...the independents' speeches were brilliant...and, as opposed to the 'oul' gang, were accurate and unscripted. By the way Griska...I've never got a resaponse from Newstalk regarding the protection of landlords and the abuse/overcharging of tenents...which in my opinion is the reason for people 'preferring' to 'dole' rather than work (see 'Mail' today pages 17/19). Perhaps you'll have more success than me!
