Listening to the debate on the Late Late Show I was astounded to hear a doctor from the audience, denying, more, outraged, at the idea that doctors would overdose patients with the full intention of ending their incurable suffering.

This is a blatent misrepresentation of the way things operate, between doctors, family and the patient. My poor sister died last March from breast cancer. By the time she was diagnosed with it, it was too late. She went through the usual torturous treatment of chemotherapy and all it did was cause greater distress and discomfort to her. With discussion between her, her doctors and my sisters, she, my beautiful sister, asked to be let die, in peace. Four days later she was gone.

I thank the doctors for helping her out of her misery and pain. I salute them. I hope they will do the same for me, should I be unfortunate enough to be in such a position.

I have put a "living will" in with my hospital records, which is not legally binding, but I want no more dragging back from the grave if there is brain impairment. (yeah ok, ha ha) but I am adamant about this.

We give animals the dignity of dying in peace, apart from the ones we slaughter to eat. Why cannot humans be treated with the same rights as an animal has?

So sorry to hear about your sister Buddha.

I'm 100% with you on this.
No prolonged painful treatment, thank you. Give me the good drugs and say goodnight.

I'm sorry for your loss Buddha..........

The main reason in Ireland is religion. People still rely on an allegorical text from before the dark ages to sway their rational compass.
Our Dáil is full of bible bashers
Ireland is possibly one of the most arcane countries on this little planet.

Ecclesiastes 8:8,
“There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.”

Ecclesiastes 7:17,
“Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?”

If this were legislated for in Ireland you'd get the same response as the abortion referendums and it probably wouldn't pass.
If the Brits aren't doing it, the Irish won't either.
If they did allow it, I'd give Ireland 30-50 years to follow suit.
