"Democracy Now" a new political movement had intended running in this election but due to the GE date being brought forward from March to Feb the timing meant they had to reconsider as the new time constraints made it impossible for some of their prospective candidates to be able to run.

Shane Ross is now the only "Democracy Now" candidate running as an Independent:-

A new political movement packed with household names and fronted by David McWilliams, Eamon Dunphy, Shane Ross and Fintan O'Toole, has aborted plans to contest the general election nationwide.

The agreement was that Democracy Now candidates would stand on five core principles, which included a commitment to holding a referendum on the EU/IMF bailout deal which the movement believes to be unsustainable; political reform and a public inquiry into the regulatory and governmental failures that caused the economic and banking crisis.

Outside of the core principles, deputies would have been free to vote with their conscience as a means of allowing people with diverse political ideologies – such as Shane Ross and Fintan O'Toole – to co-exist in the movement. "It was designed to be non-ideological," one source said. While Ross, O'Toole and Dunphy would all have contested the general election – along with at least 20 others – McWilliams' role would have been as a policy advisor.

"Democracy Later"?

Eamon Dunphy???
Don't get me wrong I like the guy but I wouldn't like to
see him in Dáil Éireann.

I'd also like to know who funds them.
400,000 in one day of pledged donations is quite a lot of money.

Fintan O'Toole said it best

I am not ashamed of having tried, but I would be ashamed of having done it badly. I'm sure that the decision not to lead people on with false hopes is the right one and I have no intention of revisiting that decision.

Eamon Dunphy???

Heaven preserve us. I was taking D McWilliams seriously on Marian Finucane's programme today until I heard that.

Parachuted candidates with no political programme or track record ? No thanks. Plenty of Independents over the years have put themselves in hock to stand, and not moaned about lateness and fundraising.

P Kenny covering this on the Radio Show now.

Bit of a joke that they couldn't organise themselves to get over an earlier GE date. If they couldn't manage to do that it makes one wonder as to their overall capabilities for the job ...

I had a flick through Fintan O'Tooles book and he doesn't give any consideration to environmental protection. Does he not realise that our flawed economy is based on economic growth brought about by natural resource availability. An ever decreasing availability.

With this one fundamental fact omitted there is no way Democracy now can succeed.

As for the other talking shops? Why are they not all getting together? Why is Claiming our Future and Democracy Now not working together? The rest also?

A sports portfolio would be too obvious. Justice for Dunphy.
