I maintain that without a radical change in the way politics is 'done' in Ireland...we will elect more of the same pension/expense-hungry fools..who will not legislate for the benefit of this country...but will 'slide' new laws in for the benefit of themselves and their rich families and buddies...in other words...the corruption will continue ad-infinitum....suggestions as to how to stop this immediately please !!!
p.s. Thank you C.F.

I see two options;
1. Bloody and immediate revolution.
2. Enough people vote for parties who, at the very least, voice a preference for genuine change.
Wouldn't hold breath for either sadly.

I think that people, having been bitten by those selected to protect them, will keep a beady eye on our elected representatives from now on.
If they don't 'adjust' their pay and benefits pro rata (or more) to the rest of us then voices will rise.
That would also be the case if they're found wanting in taking action on ending the Anglo fiasco, jailing the villains and burning bondholders.
*considers for a min* Maybe I'm being too optimistic. Must be the giddyness from finally seeing the last of the current bunch of [SNIP - rude word editor].

Don't be so dramatic. ;)
It would have been easy to bring the whole charade to a grinding halt. Unfortunately, the corrupt Irish trade unions are in cahoots with the traitors. That pretty much rules out our own "Ben Ali" moment.

The whole charade could have been brought to a grinding halt if all the people...in all the country 'ground to a halt' (save for emergencies) for a day or two. Some Union people are no doubt corrupt....but the onus should be on elected politicians to be pro-bono publico....and they, being blatantly the opposite....should all be shunned at the next election !

Ah the old divide and conquer rule. With the government looking after bankers and businessmen, the Unions looking after civil and public servants and the workers left with, well feck all basically.
It could still be brought to a grinding halt if enough workers downed tools. They just have to realise that they still have the to power to effect change.
Lets face it. Governments, bankers and businessmen don't create wealth. They just manage and trade the wealth that is created and cream off obscene amounts of money to reward themselves. Civil servants and public servants don't create wealth, they just organise the collection and distribution of revenue.
It is the ordinary working men and women that still go out and sell and build and grow and manufacture the goods, services and produce that generate the wealth of this and every other nation. Without the efforts of the working men and women there would be nothing to trade and the whole corrupt system would begin to crumble.
We don't need Unions to tell us when we have had enough and negotiate with government for a better, fairer deal. We already know we have had enough, we just need to organise the national strike before our politicians sell us down the river and the IMF have us by the balls.

(save for emergencies) for a day or two.
And here is were you're utterly wrong: Not a day or two ... it won't be called off until they're truly gone and not one day sooner.
And forget about "save for emergencies" (if you're sick, find yourself a goddamn trolley, show some solidarity with the hundreds of patients left to rot in our hospitals), this will get the ball rolling rather sooner than later.

TotalMayhem...well, somehow...though perhaps in a circuitous way....I think you agree with me....and I emphasise....except for life-saving emergencies...a complete general strike should be welcomed !

OK, well first things first, the lack of respect that public representatives show to regulations is a BIG issue.
If politicians don't care about the rules, why should anybody.
We need an enforcer with sharp teeth.

Tunisia is having it's Ben Ali moment after decades of declining living standards, oppression and slowly building up its organisations under conditions of illegality. But that was in an era when there was a long boom in the west based on phony cash.

Whatever the circumstances, the people stayed out on the streets simply did not go home.
There wasn't any union calling for some joke of a demonstration and then told them to go home after they have been laughed at sufficiently, err, their anger has been noticed by the ruling class.
