Poll shows Labour Party candidate in strong position

to win seat

An independent opinion poll carried out last week in Sligo North Leitrim put the Labour Party third from the top and in a strong position to challenge for a seat. I am very heartened by this result. I will be working hard, with the full support of the Labour Party, to rise to that challenge and win a seat.

The poll is clear evidence that voters want a change of government. At the doors, people tell me they also want to see change in the way politics is done and the way politicians govern. I share that belief and want to be part of the drive to achieve more accountability and honesty at the heart of our political system.

Twenty years ago, in my work as a journalist, in my investigation into the beef industry, I highlighted the closeness between politics and business. I have continued over the years to call governments to account; now I am standing for election with the Labour Party to make that crucial change happen.

Specifically, I want to put an end to the regime of exorbitant and unnecessary expenses paid to elected representatives. If elected I will not expect to be paid simply to turn up to do my job. I will seek repayment only of vouched, receipted expenses incurred as part of my work as a public representative. I also fully support the Labour Party’s broad-ranging platform for change, ‘140 ways to mend a broken system’.

I presume this poll was taken before McSharry was promoted to the frontbench?

Extremely wishful thinking on O'Keefe's part. Both SFs Colreavy and Ind Soc Bree will outpoll her.

Especially damaging to her will be the list of ex Labour people running against her - Cllr Veronica Cawley (Sligo Borough & County Council), Gabriel McSharry (former Labour candidate on a number of occasions in Leitrim) and Alwyn Love (Labour candidate in last locals and lives in same locality as O Keefe) and Cllr Bree (Sligo Borough & County Council) himself who was Labour TD for the old Sligo/Leitrim constituency from 92 - 97

This looks simply like a PR stunt by Labour to pretend they are in the running for a seat in order to try to boost their chances

Forgot to add: This has Bree down as "Left Alliance" whatever that means. He did not sign up to the United Left Alliance (ULA) and is running again as an Independent Socialist candidate

And relating to O Keefes comments about expenses, is this Labour policy or her makin election promises off the hoof? If it is just her then it is meaningless.

Whatever chance Susan O Keffe had of wining a seat in the Sligo/NorthLeitrim constituancy has definitly gone out the window ,after her deputy party leader Joan Burton appeared on local radio station Ocean Fm today. M/s Burton refused to confirm what her leader eamon Gilmore said a few months back, that if Labour were in power they would return the breast cancer services to Sligo General Hospital. This is an issue thats held very close to the hearts of an awful lot of women and men in the North west region. One of the reasons Jimmy Devins FF td has retired from politics is because of his cowardice in not standing up to Mary Harney then the minister of health . Its another reason Eamon (big dinner) Scanlon FF td will find it almost impossible to be re-elected in the coming election, he too showed his cowardice in not refusing to back the government at the time.. Joan Burton has definitly put her size 10s in it and Susan can now say a big thanks (yea) Joan for nothing... Politicians should remember that some issues especially health are sacrasant to people... Thats another fine mess you got us into Joan (Labour Party )

Perry FG around 10,000 votes so far. Counting mainly from Sligo town

McSharry vote and Scanlon vote collapse.

Looking like

Perry, McLoughlin FG and a real battle for 3rd seat...Colreavey of SF with a great shout.

Predicting on Vincent brown that FF will get third seat. Mustn't be as big of a collapse of FF as they suggested on local radio.

John Perry (FG) elected on 8th count.

His surplus being distributed, his colleague Tony McLoughlin very close.

Seems only Colreavy of SF can now take the 3rd seat unless the entirity of Perry's seconds go to FF.
