I would nearly have put Labour's John Kelly down for a seat because of his popularity, albeit as an independent, when he topped the poll at the last local elections. However I'm hearing a lot of negative talk about him and he was booed at a recent public meeting regarding Roscommon hospital. Also Labour are detested by a lot of people in this constituency. Think he may have scored an own goal going under their banner.
I'm guessing Strokestown is a FF stronghold, but in reality Castlerea should hold them all.

Haha, there's a few cute hoors around the town of strokes alright...used to have the widest streets in Europe apparently! Think the councillor that took offence to Ming refusing to say a prayer was from there http://www.cinews.ie/article.php?artid=7448

I remember that, he'd get my vote any day just for that. Ming the meciless that is, lest there be confusion.

Great name, gave him a second pref when he stood in Dun Laoghaire in the 1990's. I gather he's moved from (cough) pot plant horticulture to hospitals as an issue these days?? More power to the elbow... have a colleague whose elderly mother is very reliant on that hospital

No doubt he still coughs the plant but it's not mentioned on his policies anymore! I thought he was going to run as the Hospital Action Commitees (HAC) candidate but that doesn't seem to be happening but of course he is still vocal on the subject.
Yea it's a shame, used to have a maternity unit and childrens ward at one stage...now A&E is even being hacked to 8am to 8pm. I'd say the HSE long term plan is to eventually close it altogether.

Ming is the candidate endorsed by Amhran Nua in the constituency, as he has had a long reputation at fighting corruption.

They've really upped the ante over the past two weeks. FF in Roscommon have been reduced to focusing on one single issue...Luke Flanagan's attitude towards drugs. Nothing on jobs, nothing on health, nothing on inequality, nothing on corruption and political reform....EVERYTHING on scaremongering.
Ming could be a victim of his own honesty when the votes are counted thanks to the party that fear honesty the most.

Connaughton concerned about discourse on drugs
Roscommon/South Leitrim Fianna Fáil candidate Ivan Connaughton has appealed to Independent candidate Luke Flanagan to behave responsibly when discussing drug use in the media.
Mr. Connaughton has raised concerns about how young people in Roscommon and Leitrim may be influenced by Luke Flanagan’s public comments about his personal drug use.
“I have been inundated with calls and letters from parents who are deeply concerned after Luke Flanagan went on local radio recently and again discussed his own use of cannabis,” said Ivan Connaughton.
“Luke’s private life is entirely up to him. However, anyone elected as a public representative must remember that they are in a position of influence and people will listen to what they say.
“I have seen first-hand how worried parents are about their children’s attitude towards drugs. Fianna Fáil took the lead in government last year by shutting down head shops around the country and criminalising so-called legal highs, which contain dangerous chemicals. It is now illegal to buy or sell mephedrone and substances mimicking cannabis, cocaine and ecstasy. This was a strong message from Fianna Fáil to young people about the dangers associated with drug use.
“Meanwhile, Luke Flanagan continues to speak about his recreational use of cannabis in the local media and in the popular music magazine, Hot Press. His enjoyment of recreational drugs is entirely his own business and it is not my place to interfere in any way.
“However, I am deeply concerned about the fact that this subject has now become part of the acceptable public discourse in our constituency. My concern lies entirely with the young people who look up to Luke as a responsible public representative and listen to what he says. Being a parent in 2011 is difficult enough and families throughout this constituency need to be ever more vigilant to protect their children from damaging messages. I’d ask that for the duration of the campaign, we all think of families when discussing issues like drug use,” concluded Ivan Connaughton.

I'd say Ivan is regurgitating Pappies (Councillor Martin Monotone) wisdom on this one or else Ivan doesn't really know what half the people his own age get up to.

If Ivan Connaughton and FF were concerned about Irelandsyouth - then why saddle them and future generations with the debt incurred by bailing out their bankster friends?
Also, with closing down headshops - well done - successfully driving kids who would dabble in drugs regardless back into the arms of paramilitaries and criminals.

Local radio saying west Roscommon boxes have not been counted but so far looking like Naughten FG topping poll, Feighan FG coming second.
Commentators saying transfers from those two will probably favour, Ming and SF.
Ming apparently has 5000 votes already.
Labour's John Kelly not doing well but his home area of Ballaghadereen is in the west Roscommon area that hasn't been counted yet.
