A candidate called David McCarthy is standing as an independent as part of an "Independent Alliance for Change"
This initiative will see Independent candidates stand in their own constituencies on their own policy platform. There will be no party structure. We will have a shared vision about the central platform of political reform, but will not be forced to toe the line by a centralised organisation. The main focus of the established political parties is to maximise their votes at whatever cost, which leads them to pursue short-term gain at the expense of the country’s long term interests. With people of Senator Ross’ calibre joining the race, the voters will see that Independents have a real opportunity to change the face of Irish politics. Opinion polls are showing 12-14% support for Independents which could mean significant gains and lead to real reforms.
Does anyone know anything about this candidate?
Griska 20-01-2011, 03:10 PM I reckon he's flying solo, hoping others will hop on board along the way.
He mentions Ross, but not as an ally.

"Mad Pride Ireland" ? - I like - but otherwise, he looks like a career political officer type rather than a politician.
Perhaps he'll get in touch and fill us in on his political beliefs.

Given who he's worked for before, that might be a rather short post.;)
votedavidmccarthy 20-01-2011, 09:41 PM Hi all just to clarify a few points here I started what I am calling the Independent Alliance for Change so far we have 5 candidates in CSC,CNC,CE, CSW & DNE we are in talks with a candidate in Wicklow and one in Dublin and hope to spread it wider in the coming days! So I am not solo in that sense, but very Independent.
My political beliefs are my own, I have worked for political parties as well as Independents in the past.
I am running on a national platform of reform mainly focussing on political and public service reform. I am looking to make national govt small and more effective and local govt stronger and more efficient. I am hoping to help generate a conversation and focus people on the need for real and meaningful reforms.
Please log on to www.votedavidmccarthy.com to get a more detailed idea of my policies and feel free to get in touch!

Welcome :)
Would you be able to tell us who the other candidates in the group are ? We're trying to gather information on all candidates, particularly independents who might find it hard to get publicity. I'd be happy to set up a subforum for the group.

disability student 21-01-2011, 12:17 AM His father worked hard re mad pride to remove the stigma of mental illiness as he challenged the medical profession especially the psychatrists.
I saw him quite a few times at student campus when he came & gave the students a talk.

You're not voting for his father, you know. I'd assume the son is his own man.

No skin off my nose, dear. I'd have time for McCarthy pére for sure, he's put in hard yards on mental health campaigning down the years, however I do think the son has to earn his own respect. I don't believe in electoralism, especially the form where you see more of the candidate's face than their policies, but good luck to McCarthy anyway. He'll need lots of it to get within a sniff of half a quota.

votedavidmccarthy 21-01-2011, 10:04 AM Sam Lord to answer the question I am like most people hugely frustrated by the EU/IMF deal and how we have been lumped with the losses of big business/big bank speculation. I am a realist I know the cosequences for default however I do feel strongly that we need to tell those who lost money because of a bad bet that we are not paying their debt! If I loose on a horse I don't think paddy power will give me my stake back.
The worry is that we have gone into the deal now and can we get out? I worked with a few economists prior to launching to get a better understanding of this and they feel that either way we will be defaulting in the next 36 months so why not do it now on our terms!
Kim Ryder, I am definitely my own man, I work heavily with Mad Pride Ireland and have done since we started it in 2008, I am proud of that. I also have built up my own business and reputation in the communications world. I have detailed my policies on the website www.votedavidmccarthy.com have a look my motivation for running is as a frustrated self employed citizen who has had enough and felt that it was time to stand up and be counted.
Remember if people don't vote for change we will have the same faces back!
Disability student, I will pass on your kind words to John, he is up for Cork Person of the Year today so fingers crossed!

Thanks for the reply and he deserves a prize for coming up with the name "Mad Pride". Love it.
2wheels 03-02-2011, 05:17 PM john mc carthy is brilliant, i have listened to him on local and national radio and i would never miss his column in the independant, if dave is anything like his old man he is worth a vote. my problem with dave is the fact that he workrd with kathy sinnot, who is to my mind a bit of a christian fundamentalist, i dont think we need that type of dogma behind any decision making in Ireland.
The idea of abolishing town councils is a bad one, more decision making powers should be given to all local authorities, as this is real democracy, as a former TC, it is frustrating to be in just a "talking shop" when you know there are things that can be done to improve the area and you do not not have the power to do so, all you have is influence.
i hope to see dave in my area, and i wish john the best, as i think he is not very well at the moment.
Ah Well 03-02-2011, 08:32 PM The idea of abolishing town councils is a bad one, more decision making powers should be given to all local authorities, as this is real democracy, as a former TC, it is frustrating to be in just a "talking shop" when you know there are things that can be done to improve the area and you do not not have the power to do so, all you have is influence.
All Town Councils in Cork presently have 9 Councillors which is a complete joke. At the very least and if TCs are to stay there needs to be a dramatic decrease in the number of Councillors on each ...
Eg... Macroom TC - 9 Cllrs for a small Town
Macroom Electoral Area of Cork County Council, covering a very large area - 4 Cllrs
Solution - Cllrs cover both the Town and the surrounding hinterland ...
2wheels 03-02-2011, 09:27 PM I would argue the opposite. Give the town council more authority and every year appoint the chairperson to county council, cheaper to get rid of the other three county cllr's.
Town cllr's....€4000
County cllr's....€16,600 + expenses
votedavidmccarthy 04-02-2011, 06:34 AM 2 Wheels, I worked with Kathy as a political consultant, I do not share any religious voews she may have. My religious beliefs are personal to me and do not colour my political decisions in any way, believe me I understand your concerns but also believe me when I say I am an informed agnostic.
I will pass on your good wishes to dad he is good at the moment but has motor neuron disease so that as you can imagine is hard, but as with all things he is dealing with it with his usual vigour.
With regard to my policy on political reform I am looking to develop a system taht will make national govt smaller and more effective and local govt stronger and more efficient. While it will see a different look and feel to our local authorities it should give them the real decision making and budgetary powers to allow them to do their jobs within their communitties.
I hope this allays your fears? have a look at www.votedavidmccarthy.com for more info!
Captain Con O'Sullivan 04-02-2011, 08:34 AM Best of luck David and more power to you for standing and for taking the time to explain your own stance on the IMF issue here.
2wheels 04-02-2011, 10:22 AM Thank you david, i see some good stuff on your website, i have no real choice in CSC this election, so i hope you or your canvassers get to my area for a chat. At this point in time you at least look like an option. Either which way good luck to you, I know what its like, mo chara.
nickibopp 04-02-2011, 03:42 PM @ David,
We're organising (on behalf of the National Campaign for the Arts) a hustings on Monday week and I emailed an invite to you this morning.
We can find no telephone or mailing address for you but would very much like to make contact - I do hope you can make the hustings. I'm in South Central and am very relieved to find you are running and giving those of us in the constituency looking for a genuine alternative someone to consider.
As we said in the invite, "We appreciate that arts and cultural policies may not form the main concern of your proposed mandate. Concerns of artists and arts workers will be raised by the floor, with the hope that this process can assist with the development of relevant policies." The sector has a strong voice and many connections, it would be great to have you there to be introduced and to introduce ourselves.
kind regards :)
nickibopp 04-02-2011, 05:18 PM @ David again
Joe just spoke to you on the phone - delighted you can make it, we're looking forward to it.
votedavidmccarthy 04-02-2011, 06:00 PM Captain Con thanks for that, 2 wheels give me a rough idea where you are and I will tell you when we will be close by I can arrange to pop in!
