BRIAN O’SHEA NOT TO SEEK RE-ELECTION TO DAIL

I have decided to retire from Dáil Éireann at the next General Election.

This very difficult decision was arrived at following long reflection by me and discussions with my family over the Christmas period.

Having served as an Oireachtas Member for going on twenty four years the time has come for me to move on.

Under the Leadership of Eamon Gilmore the Labour Party has achieved unprecedented levels of support and I believe that the upcoming General Election is the appropriate time to introduce new candidates that will be elected.

I am confident that the Labour Party will perform extremely well in the Waterford Constituency whenever the election is held.

I will contribute in every way that I can to ensure the best possible outcome in the General Election.

I thank the people of Waterford who have supported me throughout more than thirty years in public life.

It has been a great honour and a great privilege to have served for over twenty one years in Dáil Éireann on their behalf.

I owe a great debt of gratitude to all the Labour Party Members in the Waterford Constituency, both living and dead for well over thirty years who gave me such incredible support particularly at election time.

That support was absolutely fundamental to all the electoral successes.

There have been many people outside the Labour Party for whose work and support I am extremely grateful.

My wife Eileen’s unstinting and extraordinary support throughout my career was key.

My children too, played a very large part and like, Eileen bore the ups and downs of a political household.

Last and by no means least my grateful thanks to my staff both present and previous for their professionalism, dedication and very hard work.

I can testify to his abilities and intelligence having dealt with him on a couple of occasions. Not enough politicians like him.
