I don't think Eamon Gilmore is going to agree with the latest proposal from UNITE:-

One of the country's biggest trade unions has urged the Labour Party to reject a coalition with Fine Gael in favour of a left-wing government.

Unite, which is affiliated to the Labour Party, called on its 60,000 members to vote for and transfer to leftist parties in the forthcoming general election.

Jimmy Kelly, the union's regional secretary, suggested Labour and Sinn Fein could form the State's first left-wing government along with support from independents.

I think UNITE deserve credit for this.

There would be some hope for Ireland if this happened

A serious well thought out impartial comment that lacks sarcasm? Surely not!:D

Yes, put them all in power. Let them explain where they will get the free money. There is no such thing of course. Socialism has crippled Ireland and more of it will not help.

But it will be a lesson resisted by many so roll on the election

What socialism Youngdan? What planet have you been living on that you could conceivably describe the politics of the last ten years as socialism? Ireland has been the one of the most ruthless experiments in neo-conservative policies in the western world.

You don't call a country of 5 million with a budget of 50 billion socialist? 10000 for every man, woman and child. 50000 a year for a family of 5.

Then when it all comes down, people stand there with their mouth open wondering what happened.

How is it not socialist when the majority of the people are living of some sort of social welfare.

The people seem to be so brainwashed that they can not even recognise simple arithmetic

Socalism is not defined by the amount of money the state spends on its citizens. You could in theory have a very poor socialist country where very little was spent and on the other hand a very wealth capitalist country where a great deal was spent.

Jim Kelly is SWP (or at least was) so he is not exactly a neutral.

everyone seems to have a different interpretation.

Ireland is now the former. a very poor country socialist country with very little to spend.

You must have gone to the same University that I did. The predominant intellectual approach to the teaching of most subjects was that everything was a matter of interpretation. I used to call it the Alice In Wonderland school of thought even though my professors did not care for the designation.

I agree Sam. Everything is not a matter of interpretation. If it were, life would be as boring and predictable as my translation class! Young Dan, without being too harsh, is from America. Many Americans don't even know what socialism is and their brain screams stalin at the thought of that word and traitor at the thought of communism.

These are all interesting points, but this "where is the money going to come from" debate is spreading, thanks to youngdan and people responding to him, across several threads, diluting all of them.

The thread was started to look at a call for Trade Unionists not to vote for a FG/Lab coalition. If there is a general discussion wanted on socialism vs capitalism, please would someone start a thread on it.
