View Full Version : Nominations for Ireland's most anonymous TD?

Must admit that I heard the name 'Mary Wallace' at some stage in my life but I didn't realise that she is a public representative and a retiring TD.
Any other nominations for the most low profile TD in this Dail?
Let's get a list of nominations together and then you can run a poll PJ to see who wins the crown.
(Bit worried we mightn't have enough crowns in the vault though)

One of my favourite anonymous TDs is Brendan Smith(Cavan/Monaghan) who of course is also the Minister for Agriculture. He managed to come to public attention twice in this Dail: first with the pork scare in December 2008 and later with 'free cheese' last year.
He had an unforgettable The Week in Politics when Sean O'Rourke asked him about Irish bond yields and he took refuge in quoting Kells Mart prices:D

Paul who ?
He's an FG TD from Galway East whose current claim to fame is that he's grooming his son to replace him. A complete non-entity, the only time I ever saw him speak publicly he was urging people to vote for the Lisbon Treaty even if they hadn't read it, as after all, most people pay their electricity bills without reading the terms and conditions and they get on grand :D. He's been in the Dáil since 1981 and the Seanad for 4 years before that, so it's a fitting epitaph to the accomplishments of his political career that you've never heard of him.

For me it has to be John Cregan TD. A man with a job in the public eye, a member of our national parliament and yet he is not a household name in his own household. Anonymous doesn't get more anonymous than this guy. Classic back-bench voting fodder.

I've never head of John Cregan. What party and constituency?
He is FF party Limerick West but the boundary changes mean he will now be standing in Limerick constituency although some of his stronger supporters would have been transferred to Kerry North/Limerick West.

@_politicalworld how's the voting going for Ireland's most anonymous TD? Do you win by getting most or least votes?

Even of his FF page, under political record, there is one mention of Limerick but FIVE mentions in a short paragraph of Dromcolliher!!
So he is the TD for Dromcolliher! Presumably they have heard of him there but the only thing that ever happened in Dromcolliher in its entire history is that the cinema burnt down there in 1926.
It has to be him!!! Mister Dromcolliher himself!!!

Ten TDs have spoken less than four times each in the Dáil chamber in 2010.
The tight-lipped ten, published by the Irish Daily Mail, shows former Taioseach Bertie Ahern didn’t utter a single word.
Kerry TD Jackie Healy-Rae cost the Irish people €14,142 for every word he spoke in the Dáil this year. Now there’s some food for thought when you’re heading to the polling station early next year.
The tight-lipped ten include:
Bertie Ahern (0)
Jackie Healy-Rae (1)
Michael Woods (1)
Christy O’Sullivan (2)
Eamon Scanlon (3)
Dr Rory O’Hanlon (3)
Tom Kitt (3)
Noel Grealish (3)

It seems we have not found an adequate mechanism whereby we can we can select a public representative who, by definition, shuns any kind of media attention. Usually with politicians, it is a case of trying to deny them the oxygen of free publicity. In this case, the candidates are "successful" despite their being virtually unknown outside their own local area.
I see Fianna Fail have changed the profile of John Cregan TD on the FF website to "Page Not Found" which enhances his anonymity even further.

I dont know anything about Fleming but a quick search shows that his son is anything but anonymous:
A TD's son has been given 18 months behind bars for a litany of offences including stoning a priest's horse until it was cut and bruised, assault and indecency at a golf club.
The teen, 18-year-old Peter Fleming is the only child of Laois TD, Sean Fleming.
The Fianna Fail politician has publicly apologised on behalf of the Fleming family, saying: "I am truly sorry and the family is very sorry for all the difficulties Peter caused to a lot of people along the way."

It's a fatally flawed project - in probability there are several overlooked because they operate completely invisibly and we've completely missed them.
Perhaps it's harder to hide in a smaller Parliamentary Party.

True - if you arent a minister or front-bench spokesperson in the larger parties - you do not have much of a profile in the national media.
in the smaller parties - they barely have enough members to have spokespersons for seperate topics. - also if you are an attention-seeker,contraversial (Creighton,McGuinness, Snoddy) etc etc),independents with the Gov over a barrel( the Leprauchaun and lowry) or just nuts (Gogarty)
it is easier to have a profile too than those who might be good legislators or TDs in the truest sense (messengers to the dail from their constituents...not legislators....more go betweens)....
For example - MJ nolan was mentioned - a real back bencher - but down here in Carlow a good 8-10,000 gave him a 1st preference at every election since 1987 and everybody knows him -
How do you quantify anonymous? - all depends where you are standing doesn't it - I'd be scratchin me head trying to think of anything Martin Ferris said since 2007 - likewise I'd have a hard job picking half the labour PP out of a suspect-line up - i suppose you automatically are clued in to those who matter to you.

There are subjectivies and loyalties that make people more visible. But hopefully enough people will vote to iron those vagaries out. In the meantime, he / she who dares, wins. Cyprian Brady was first out the trap, looking for first preferences :) on the back of his nomination here.
A good personal campaign, even a late one, might save a person from ignominious victory in this poll.

Christy O'Sullivan made page five of the Examiner today alongside Noel O'Flynn in a story on Cork back benchers supporting Micheal Martin. There's even an election poster type mugshot where he looks as anodyne as it is possible for anyone to be.
I'm swayed in one direction by the fact that he made it to page 5 of the Examiner but the photo clinches it. He could have safely chosen a career as a master criminal in the certain knowledge that no one would ever pick him out in a police lineup.

I voted for the Ulick fella (it is a man?) simply because with a name like that I would remember if I had heard of him before and I haven't.

Christy originally ran as an Indo but signed in blood with FF in 2007, got the party ticket for the Elections that year and topped the Poll for FF in Cork South West

Capt Con will be delighted to hear that upon Christy being elected to the Dáil in 2007 his son Christopher O'Sullivan FF was co-opted to fill his Council Seat, Cork County Council, Skibbereen Electoral Area ... serving the people of Skib without being even elected ... nice work if ya can get it ...

You may have nodded off for a while because deppitty O'Connor has been a deppitty for the Tallaght area (DSW) for a while now but, given he shares a constituency with the Kebab sultan, he has been very much FFs second fiddle there.

A Classic Political Moment - and the only time [EVER] my jaw dropped in astonishment!
Definitely on the way to the top ... of what I have no idea!..

It would have to be Enda Kenny who's been locked away in his bunker in Tora Bora Mayo for over a month now.o
Enda who?

Just a question, what's the prize for the winner of this competition? Perhaps we could send them a certificate, and invite the papers to a conferral ceremony. I'm sure CFlower won't mind defraying the expenses...

Very apt :D. As of now, Christy (o'?) Sullivan is ahead, so an inscribed plaque owuld need to be sent to wherever it is Mr (o'?) Sullivan comes from.

I've found this (this), perhaps another competitition would be to read it and see who can recognise the most TDs: at least 3/4s are nameless non-entities

The Poll is ticking along nicely. I'd like to get it up to about 200 votes, so if anyone would link it to their Face Book Page or tweet it, that would help us get it over the bar.
I've just found out that John Cregan is actually Deputy Chief Whip kept that very quiet he is also a teller.

Well, are we close to declaring a winner ? Are we about to catapult Ireland's most politically moribund area (West Limerick) into the limelight? Is John Cregan about to lose the cloak of anonymity?
