View Full Version : Is Good Friday a Holiday?

A mate of mine who is not from Ireland has been told he has to work next Friday in a job that pays the minimum wage. However, he will not be paid time and half as he normally gets on a Sunday. Seeing as the busses are on a Sunday timetable next Friday, he will have to get a taxi to work, which will cost €20 quid, which essentially means working 3 or 4 hours for free.
So, Good Friday is only a holiday for certain workers?
Can depend on what sort of contract they are on.
Perm/temp etc..
Kind of, if I work it I get a day back for doing so but no extra payment. Its a bit vague.

Good Friday isn't a public holiday but many employers close on a discretionary basis.
Dublin Bus run a full weekday schedule on Good Friday.

Nope, they run a Sunday service....

Well when they put the PS on a 7 day will 8pm to 8pm I hope transport policy will reflect that. No point asking us to leave the car at home if the first bus comes at 10:12am and is full.

Well that will be the first time they have done so and there is no comment to that effect on the Dublin Bus website.
Last year's announcement indicates that they ran a full weekday service, excluding Nitelinks.

I love all these good Friday threads; nothing like a bit of good Friday disagreement.

Interesting, because my mate asked a driver today and they said it would be a Sunday service.

After 13 years in IT I have never once had Good Friday off. Still, the traffic is non-existent and is the most enjoyable drive to work of the year.

Its one of those great Irish quagmires
no one knows
no one knows who to ask
there is no one to ask (they are not answering their phones)
if someone has the day off they assume they are on the make because they see others that don't, so they keep it on the QT
.......................
don't ask don't tell - invented in Ireland
