Listening to Tom Dunne, he said some social welfare offices are closing today? If true then this is def going to the the spark that sets it all off.
Prepare for fireworks, this is the beginning of the end.

That would keep IBEC and Lenihan happy. They could cut wages comprehensively, according to plan.

What is the strategy of the CPSU, is it to p*ss off the public? If it is they are succeeding. What about people that may have to sign on this afternoon, is there any provision for them to sign another day or will this be another backlog that their members will have to cope with?

IBEC, FF, & the Unions have been stealing from the average Irish taxpayer
I want to see them all routed from our Island.
That is the goal of this revolution

I don't think the Union leadership can see beyond the idea of putting pressure on the Government. They presumably think that the most effective way of doing that is to have as many irate members of the public phoning their TDs as possible.
It is a job and a half to get some unity between trade union members and the wider public who want to keep services going, but it needs to be done. Fianna Fail can't back down from the cuts as they are agreed with the IMF and ECB. The agreed strategy for Ireland is to push wages down to regain competitivity, as we don't have the option to devalue.
This can't possibly succeed as a strategy, as wages are only one component of business costs, and pushing wages down is also deflationary. Other prices would have to be got down too, including rents, rates, energy and telecomms and there's no plan to do that. If the Unions are beaten on the public sector side, it will be much harder for anyone in the private sector to protect themselves. Wages are being cut in highly profitable companies as well as in companies that are struggling.

it smells to me that the english union leaders are intent on 2 things:
1. Destroying Ireland's economy even further
2. Justifying their own 6 figure salaries
the government should stop deducting union dues and tell the unions to collect the subs directly from members.

Piss off the 500,000 unemployed. Genius PR  This and the passport office debacle will destroy any remaining empathy for Public Sector Employees. It's positively hair-brained.

you hardly expect anything better from the Anglo-Loyal Unions do you?
Remember, they sat on the board of the Central Bank
The Anglo-Loyal Unions turned a blind eye to the lack of banking regulation because they were busy raiding the taxpayers cash.

The workers in the passport office and social welfare offices are mostly only CAs and COs, the lowest paid and skilled of PS workers. How cynical of ICTU to use them as canon fodder in their pay war, how little they think of themselves to allow it.

And how evil of FF to cut the very low paid workers. Try living in Dublin when earning under 30k a year....
