Much better than I expected. Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington.

Heroin in New York. Dark, dirty and violent, but much less laboured and more real than similar films.

Very stilted I thought and overly romanticised when it came to the actual Rising but the bit before that was grand

Some fine seventies details. The wardrobe and makeup dept. must have had a lot of fun:)

Well, it didn't show him running away from brave Tommies or eating children so a lot better than what we'd have to have endured if RTÉ got their grubby hands on it.

If you can cope with the bad Irish cop fom Cracker playing Connolly then it's a good show. The old Kathleen Clarke clip was a tonic.

Wasn't bad pity they don't show the seven days that RTE made in 1966:rolleyes:

I didn't think they went ott on the romance at all. I mean, they could have shown him being stipped naked by Lee-Wilson for the titilation of the nurses at the windows in the Rotunda.

Seen this one last year, it's a decent movie but a bit too glossy and not exactly close to reality. If you're interested in the matter, there's Mr. Untouchable, a documentary about Nicky Barnes, the 'other' Harlem heroin kingpin of the 70ies.

American Gangster suggested that heroin was bought direct in Vietnam by a glack gangster and shipped back to the US in coffin flights and from there flooded direct into the black communities. Of course the film suggested that bar the odd corrupt cop, the state forces were not behind any of this and didn't know it was happening.

Kev Bar has posted on this subject.

People are looking around for fantasy chemtrails in the sky when the real chemtrails are all too evident on the ground, from the Helmand and Columbia.

Air America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_America_%28film%29)suggests a more credible and realistic source of the heroin. The corporations involved in the making and financing of American Gangster no doubt have their tentacles in the 'security industry' and its allied fields; as such they would have the need to foster fables.

The "threatens to reveal their operations to Washington" line is where it goes badly wrong.

Clarify please.

The suggestion in the film that Washington knew nothing about mass import of heroin on their own planes, for years on end, is not credible.

Very true and also the reason why it would have been political suicide for an American senator to attempt to highlight the issue. If memory serves me correctly the CIA agent in charge of the Air America operation went on to work in Panama of all places; despite being exposed. It really is amazing just how blatant they are about this stuff.

Totally off topic but I googled Christopher Robbins, the author of Air America, and discovered that he also wrote a book entitled 'The Empress of Ireland (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1104714.The_Empress_of_Ireland)' which looks interesting.

Met Robbins at the UK launch of the book along with about 20 Air America guys and their wives. A strange experience, most of the spooks worked in S. America later.

Yeah it states, after the credits, that the CIA man portrayed as 'Diehl' in the film went on to be their top man in Panama during the Noreaga era.
